Why is this legal and brewers cannot open their own beer store?

2015 Jan 28
good question.

The microbrewers should just open a store and schedule a continual beer auction...Tuesday through Sunday...9 am to 6 pm. We're auctioning off an unlimited supply of half growlers...once the price hits $7 the auction is automatically over. Bidding starts at $7.

Seriously though, it's Ontario. Asking 'why' to any alcohol related question just leads to frustration.

www.agco.on.ca

From the FAQ: "Alcohol can only be auctioned under the authority of an Auction Authorization. Private citizens can donate beverage alcohol for these events, but manufacturers and licensees who have purchased alcohol under their liquor sales licence may not. For more information on auctions, visit the Auction Authorizations web page."

Not to throw shade at the obvious problems and (legitimate) frustrations regarding the alcohol sale laws & regulations in Ontario - but what does this charity auction have anything to do with microbrewers and their right to sell their own beer?

The Music & Beyond Festival is a great and relatively new music festival in Ottawa and the wines are donated by private donors to benefit the cause. The proceeds go to support the festival and I assume no brewers were hurt in the organization of this event.

Perhaps I just didn't like the implied tone of "Why is this legal and brewers cannot open their own beer store?" but to me, it sounds more like "why can I juggle oranges and not throw apples?" It is completely unrelated in terms of purpose and where the revenue/sales end up. I just want this event/thread to get the response and respect that it deserves from the OF community rather than having it clouded by a whole different matter completely.

Side note: I've volunteered previously as a wine auction held by the Ottawa Food Bank, so I don't think this is the ONLY wine auction in Ottawa. However, I believe the Food Bank wine auction is by invite only, so perhaps this is the only PUBLIC wine auction in Ottawa.

Well perhaps that subject line should have said "Charity Fund Raiser" because you were the first one to mention the word "Charity", Qster .

And I did not read the o.p. to the end to see the words "proceeds go to" which implies a charity, but does not necessarily mean one. But since you do mention it - a music festival is a charity these days?

Anyway, yes it was a tangential leap from the O.P.

2015 Jan 31
Actually, Music and Beyond IS a non-profit organization with a charity status :P I would definitely be less outspoken in defense of say... BluesFest.

Ok ok, enough blabbering from me... back to the WINE! :D

Any idea on the kinds / types lot sizes of wine being auctioned?

I'd love to pickup a few cases of a decent Amarone or great Ripasso but I don't have enough time to sit through the whole auction and go home empty handed.

You don't have to sit through the whole auction. You can also bid online from March 9th at 1:00 p.m. Visit our website at www.musicandbeyond.ca for update on the event. Our catalogue should be available soon.

That's good to hear.

I swear that line wasn't there before "Check back soon for the downloadable wine catalogue and online bidding dates."
