Favorite restos in south Ottawa? [General]
2013 Nov 21
I'd love to see more restos in Ottawa South:)
I like the Shallows for brunch and KS on the keys for lunch/dinner it has a wide variety of menu items so in a group someone can always find an item to enjoy and it's a pretty venue. I think Kelsey's is OK too in the resto chain category, what I like especially is their patio in the summer;)
I enjoyed Pho Bamboo and ottawa delivery sushi is a cute spot too:) Nice decor at the eat in resto, food wise I especially like the miso soup, gyoza and their veggie sushi:D

I second Stewtine's recommendation for Pelican Grill.
Flying Piggy's Bistro Italiano ain't half bad either.
There's a great sandwich and pastry shop on Kilborn called 3 Sisters Bakeshop that I really like (it's in a plaza... not sure of the name - there's a TD Bank and McGuinty's old office).
If you're into shish taouk, kebab and halabi, head to The Clay Pot in the Saade International Plaza, also on Kilborn.

If we're going to include Old Ottawa South - yep, Carmen's Veranda is great. Taylor's Genuine Food and Wine Bar is good (no breastfeeding though... :-| ... man, they'll never live that one down). Stella Luna has good gelati and one of the few places you can get San Pellegrino Chinotto, which I love.

Pelican is ok- but lately for take-out service is bad.
I tried a few times to order fish and chips and was in that plaza for at least an hour and was told they do not do take out when the restaurant is full and busy.
That happened to me a few times already.
-also Pelican changed the shrimps they sell. They used to carry phosphate and preservative free shrimp and now only have the kind with preservatives.
I used to buy them all the time...not anymore.
Cedar's food counter and the cold/prepared section is good!
The only place I can find "eggplant salad" (they call it mama ghanouj),I havent seen that salad anywhere else for sale.
I can make my own,but it is so time consuming to make, esp if you are just 1 person eating it.
I will have to add Malak Pastry- they make everything in the store.
Also the only place I have seen middle eastern ice cream for sale, they make Ashta ice cream there.
Havana Cafe is very good too!

Cedar's is much closer for me, seeing I have no car and it is a short bus ride away...
Cedar's food counter can also make some dish every day and now they do not, but was told I can always ask to have some fish cooked and can get the fish I want in the grocery section and they will charge a couple dollars extra and add a salad or whatever.
Also I've gotten grilled chicken brochette platters, but not since the summer as I just haven't... but they also take around 20-25 minutes to make as the chicken is not even prepared for those until you order, so it is a bit slow.

For living by the airport, we don't eat much near home.
However, I really like Simpson's butcher shop for fabulous service and house-made sausages
Food-wise, my closest favorite restaurant has to be Cafe My House. Haven't been in a while, but the food was SO SO good, even for totally meat-i-tarian me.
Matar market on Bank south of Hunt Club looks like a dive, but the shawarma is good and charcoal grilled.
Shawarma Palace at Bank/Hunt club isn't bad, really spiffy inside, decent Shawarma. Shawarma up here just doesn't compare to the Lebanese I used to be able to get in Dearborn, though.
The dessert place behind the Wendy's at south of Hunt Club on bank is quite good. Good gelato type stuff. I haven't been in since they expanded.
Pho Thieu Do isn't bad, but the broth isn't as good as Pho Bo Ga 3 (our fave), and the prices are a bit high.

I noticed Ten Sushi but can not find a website for them yet...
There is also another AYCE sushi on Bank st Fusion something, it used to Be Emperor Dining Lounge and was better then.
Now for AYCE, it is ok for lunch but my aunt had a bad headache after eating here...so not sure what was in her food.
I hope Ten sushi will be better...

Taylors is lovely, with nice charcuterie and wines.
Stella Luna has superb gelato flavours, which are house made by an Italian-trained worker.
Havana cafe disappointed me last time I was there, but the mojito lemonade is delish.
Rideau Bakery sells incredible egg bread, which makes sublime toast.
KS on the Keys is a terrible restaurant, with several typos on the menu (strip lion with plumb sauce?)
Really south in Manotick is a fave sushi place called SushiSun. Try the spicy Manotick roll and dragon roll.
REALLY REALLY south in Osgoode is the famous Red Dot. The comfort food is always spot on, and the desserts are all homemade, especially don't miss the sticky toffee cake.

I agree with both of the previous posts. KS on the Keys is slightly less than adequate although my kids could find something they liked. The menu is huge, but not very good.
As to chinese restaurants, if they decorate and spell their menu properly, I already know that their prices are too high. My favorite restaurant in Vancouver used to sell human chicken. Tasted good but I never did figure out who their supplier was.

Stella Luna has great gelato and always has gelato.
Malak pastry up the street also has really great gelato and sorbet and I like the Malak sorbets better as they use the whole fruit in the sorbets and not a syrup or puree.
(so if you get kiwi sorbet it has the actual kiwi seeds in it too...).
But they do not always make gelato in winter. Sometimes they do and some weeks not.
Malak also makes some Ashta Lebanese ice cream and this is the only place I have seen this at. It is very different and has rose water and pistachio or almonds in it.
Kind of Ottawa South I guess also, Super Duper Pizza has great fried chicken.
It is made fresh to order, so kind of slow for delivery but really good.
The Super Duper wrap is also good, they bake a bread out of pizza dough and use that as the wrap part and even the "small" sandwich is enough for 2 people.
I've had their chicken and vegetable super wraps and both were good!

I haven't lived in Ottawa for a long time, but when I grew up there, there were some awesome (independent) pizza spots.
Venizia, down in the market on Dalhousie (great after last call).
Bella Vista, at Bank and Alta Vista.
My absolute favourite is/was K&S Pizza, which I have thoroughly enjoyed since the first month they opened, in the '70s (especially when they were in their original spot - although, I have been to the new location, and the pizza was just as good as I remembered it.
As for the chains, the only one that could make a pretty darned good "za" was Fat Albert's, back in the day.

Jericho is in the Glebe and is quite good for Lebanese food.
-they do take out too and it is cheaper.
Not "local" but Whole Foods has amazing nachos and I can not even make them for that price.
They fry their own corn tortilla chips and you get a choice of" one protein" spicy tofu cubes, chicken, beef or shredded pork.
There is 2 cheese choices-mozzarella (I think) or pepper jack, feta, also a cheese sauce.
0k, guess that is 4 choices...
Then salsas, guac,sour cream, vegetables.
It is a $8 flat fee or you can get a burito or 3 tacos.
The funny thing is they do not put the nachos or tacos in the oven,so not really melted cheese-but still super good.
My last order of nachos had 10 toppings at least and was quite a lot. My friend really liked them, even the next day they were tasty enough to eat.
