Organic meat in Ottawa? [General]

2011 Apr 17
Hi guys...this is my first post in the forum. My husband and I have decided that we'd like to eat much more organic food. I'm trying to find a list of places where I can buy fresh organic meat in Ottawa. We don't really want to buy a whole side of a cow or have a big freezer full at this point.

I went to Saslove's on Wellington and the pork we had from there was amazing!

We got a pork roast from Aubrey's and it was good although nothing special. (However, I understand that there can be variations depending on how I cook it.) When we were at Aubrey's they said they weren't organic, but all of their meat was locally grown which was better. What do you think about that?

Where else can we get fresh organic meat in Ottawa?

Organic Girl posts on here, and she sells organic meat at the Ottawa Organic Market behind the Canadian Tire at Bank and Heron on Saturdays.

Forum - the localvores' thread has a lot of info though most of the places would require a freezer

You can get organic beef directly from this farm, about 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa. You can even see your animal walking around. :-) His price is less than the supermarket too, but you do need a freezer.

Also organic beef is a bit chewier than supermarket, which some people don't like, the animals are walking around getting exercise (maybe a good candidate for sous vide?).

The food co-op Marche Outaouais has a lot of organic vendors for meats, but they are "local" to Quebec.
You have to go pick up what you order online onThursdays 3-8pm or Fridays I think.

most of the meats I have got so far are frozen, but I was told if you contact some vendors they do have fresh meats sometimes too.

Here is their site, you can see prices too without signing up,

I buy organic bacon from one farmer and it is amazingly good!

As to whether organic or local or other are better I think its a matter of personal preference. I'm pretty sure you can get some outstanding meats in all categories as well as crappy meat in all categories. As with most things if you buy from a small producer, their lively hood is more closely linked with their product. My personal belief is that organic on its own does not improve the taste, however there may be other benefits. Experiment and decide for yourself. If you find something you like - keep going with it.

I bought some from www.totallynaturalbeef.ca/ last time and was quite happy with it. I'm not done with what I bought yet but I'm thinking of buying from him again in a few months. His stuff is frozen.

I also like the O'Brien farm from the ottawa farmer's market and the one in Kanata (I think). Not organic but he doesn't load them with steroids and antibiotics so that's good enough for me. He also ages it 14 days before selling. Obrien can be fresh or frozen.

Thanks guys! I was hoping for another store where I could just stop in after work and pick up a steak or some chicken breasts, but it looks like there aren't many!

I'll definitely be checking out the farmer's markets.

While not technically in Ottawa, "La Maison Bisson" in Gatineau (www.lamaisonbisson.com) has organic meat, amongst many other delicious foodstuffs, including both local and imported products.

Off the top of my head, Aubreys in the Market, Glebe Meat market on Bank and Sasloves on Wellington.
