What happened to Luke's Spicy Take-Out? [General]

2009 Sep 13
Does anyone know what became of Luke's Spicy Take-Out? It served Jamaican food - some of the best jerk and fried chicken, not to mention roti, fish, patties, etc. It was located on Alta Vista near Bank Street (in a strip mall) but a Lebanese bakery now stands in its place. And, sadly, the Island Jerk, which is very close by, simply doesn't compare.

So if anyone knows where I can find Luke, please drop me a line.

Cheers and thanks,

E.

Luke move to Alta Vista and Bank 15 years ago. Then no hide nor hair of him for over 11 years. He must have retired. A real shame he made the best patties not that yellow flaky awful pastry but the same stuff he made his roti's with. I miss Luke.

He made patties with chapati? That sounds awesome. This is giving me a hankering for some island food... will have to hit Mugena this week.

He also had the best fried chicken.

Mmmmm. His fried chicken was absolutely to die for. I think that maybe what I miss the most. I heard that Luke as doing some volunteer work - teaching immigrants to cook healthy. Boy, I wish that he would offer cooking classes more broadly - I'd line up to learn how to mak his roti AND his fried chicken.

I was addicted to his jerk chicken and rice with beans. We also used to get fried plantain on the side. I have not had jamaican food since he left. He even used to deliver!

Last I heard when he closed up shop was that he would continue catering.

His patties were wonderful; I don't think he used quite the same dough as for the roti, but I suppose it's possible, in retrospect. I really miss the non-flaky crust, though; I used to buy sacks of the patties on Friday nights, eat one in the car immediately, and share the remainder with friends later on. So good.
