Media Release:
AT GCTC’S CELEBRITY HORS D’OEUVRES FUNDRAISER, THE FOOD STARS

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Tired of eating alone? Doing dishes? Want to see the city’s top chefs duel for the coveted Silver Spoon Award? Celebrity Hors d’Oeuvres is back! Tartan Homes presents Celebrity Hors d’Oeuvres in support of the Great Canadian Theatre Company on Tuesday, October 28, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The event location is at Sala San Marco, one of the participating restaurants, on 215 Preston Street, Ottawa. An admission ticket is $35, with food tokens (redeemable for a one-of-a kind, gourmet hors d’oeuvres) at $2 each. Star sponsored by McKeen Loeb Glebe, the event has 17 top restaurants and caterers and 20 local celebrities all volunteering their time and talent. Tickets are available at GCTC’s Box Office by calling (613) 236 – 5196, or by sending an email to development@gctc.ca. Visit online at www.gctc.ca.

The structure of the fundraiser event is simple, with attendees buying and then exchanging food tokens for hors d’oeuvres. At the end of the night, the restaurant with the most tokens wins the coveted and shiny “Silver Spoon Award.” Event organizer Sarah Feldberg provides the insider information: “The twist? The tactics are sneaky and fun. Teams yell at each other, goad each other and set up clever advantages. Last time we did this, Kinki brought a girl in a bikini to serve sushi off of, and a local actor got in a wrestling match with a local politician. The event was a sell out in 2005. The demand to hold it again has been incredible, so we’ve brought it back!”

Absinthe Café, Allium, A'roma Meze, Canvas, Dish Catering, Epicuria, Juniper, Kinki, Le Café (NAC), Mambo, Murray Street, Pelican Fishery & Grill, Sala San Marco, Savanna Café, Thyme & Again, Urban Element and Whalesbone are the participating restaurants and caterers. They are paired with celebrities, famous for being talented or political …or both: Todd Duckworth, Actor; Mary Ellis, Actress; Oni the Haitian Sensation, Slam Poet; Christine Leadman, Councillor; Paul Dewar, Federal MP; Gay Cook, Ottawa Citizen Food Columnist, Author; Stacey Metulynsky, Host, Food Networks This Food That Wine; Adrian Harewood, Host, CBC Ottawa All in a Day; Robin Duetta, Publisher, FoodMODE; Dave Smith, owner Nates Deli; David Chernushenko, Retired Green Party Leader; Ron Eade, Citizen Food Editor; Harvey Slack & Laurier Lapierre; Kate Hurman, Actress; Richard Patten, Retired Politician; Michael Mancini, Actor; Maureen Smith, Actress; Annie Lebevre, Actress; Lise Ann Johnson, Artistic Director, GCTC (and director of Zadie’s Shoes, playing at GCTC October 21 – November 20); Local Farmers Barbara Schaefer, Valerie Michaud, Hank Van’t Slot. GCTC appreciates this support.

GCTC proudly moved into its new home, the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, one year ago. Close to 30,000 people attended GCTC’s inaugural Capital Letters season of plays in this new cultural facility. GCTC is in its first Stage of its 2008-2009 season and working on finishing the final Stage of the Making it Greater Capital Campaign. With $1.1 million still needed to complete this project, support from the community is required. Contact GCTC’s Development Director Leslie Turcotte at (613) 236-5192 x311 for more information on how to become involved or to make a contribution.

Just going to bump this thread since the event is happening this Tuesday. Anyone going?

Chimichimi - I thought this looked really interesting when it was posted. Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment... maybe the next time round.

Hopefully if they continue with this fundraiser and make it annual event, it will get more media exposure ahead of time, then at least I can make sure it gets into the Ottawa Foodies Event Wiki and even more OFs might attend if they knew farther ahead of time.

Are you going?

I am still thinking this one over. It sounds like it could be a fun night out...

I'm going! Should be fun.

Brian Mc - Please, come back afterwards and give us a full report. Inquiring minds want to know.

Will-do. Does anyone know if drinks are served? Haven't read anything about that, most important, issue.

Brian Mc - Odd, that the GCTC website doesn't mention anything... but ya think there would at least be wine available.

First thing's first, Sala San Marco's bar was indeed open. Cash bar, your ticket got you a free drink.

All in all a really nice evening, nothing like stuffing your face when the weather is absolutely fierce outside.

The ticket was $35 and you could add on $20 to get you your first 10 tokens (each token got you one dish with one exception). Restaurant with the most tokens wins. Really fun atmosphere with enough seating for everyone (it wasn't crazy crowded, sometimes an entrance fee is a good thing).

Stand Outs: Sala San Marco did an awesome Hip of Beef, a welcome addition with all the teensy hors d'ouevres around. Absinthe did a "five course" plate and charged 4 tokens for it (I actually didn't bite, didn't want to let go of my 4 tokens, and, full disclosure, was rooting for another restaurant!). Kinki/Mambo had a half naked woman looking incredibly uncomfortable lying on their table. Juniper did a pan-Canadian theme with some excellent dishes: A nice maple cream tart, a bowl of salted cod and some awesome braised pork belly. The Courtyard did some ice cream cones, their pistachio praline was really nice. Pelican had their trademark smoked salmon. Murray Street did a really interesting elk and grape terrine with a tomato/pumpkin gelatin and a spicy walnut on a homemade pretzel (I HAVE to make it out to their restaurant ASAP). Whalesbone did their oysters and had duck confit on sweet potatoe with cranberry on top (like a bite-sized turkey dinner! Yum!). Savana had nice shrimp on a pear relish with some really tasty pastry/cracker base.

Winners was Absinthe with Kinki coming second and Whalesbone in third.
