I was surprised to see so many negative reviews on here for one of my go to family restaurants. Yikes! I agree that the menu is not very exciting - I tend to think of it as more family oriented cooking where all of our ages can find something good that they like to eat. I have noticed that they have been doing a lot of new things in terms of specials lately and have some new cooks making their mark. Staff is always very friendly, efficient and great with kids. The food for breakfasts, lunch and dinner is good quality with good portions. Again, not a super exciting menu but in my experience our meals have always been well prepared, fresh, Reliable and a decent price. I've been going here for about 5 years or so - there used to be a real slimeball manager (I believe someone else on here referenced him as the 'nasty owner' - he was not the owner - I remember him well and avoid his family's place down on Elgin too!)but he is gone now and they have new management in place who are doing a good job. It's not the same place at all. My favourites are the omelettes for breakfast, the cranberry club wrap for lunch and either the chicken parm, lasagna or one of the specials for dinner!

Nasty owners (unless changed) which is always a possibility--one of my kids worked here briefly a few years ago. I believe the owner also runs a popular resto/pub on Elgin that I would suggest folks check out before trying. ff Again, knowing it was some time ago, we had some bad experiences.

Just a comment on their business practices:

When I first moved here in the 80's and didn't know anything at all about the city, a man approached a friend and I and offered to sell us each a BUY 10 AND GET ONE FREE dinner package for $10 (x3). For Kristy's. That sounded like a good deal to me. Idiot.

We were on Bank St at the time. We both asked him where Kristy's was and he said it was just a couple of blocks up the road.

Okay, deal.

The next day we decided to walk the few blocks to Kristy's and try it out. It became a joke after a while that we were never going to find the place, but we did get there, eventually. I just looked it up on Google Maps: 7.1 km, 1 hr 27 min (walking).

We weren't terribly impressed with the food, but it was decent enough to keep going back. When we finally had enough stamps to get our free meal, we were told that the promotion had ended months before. They never told us that when they were stamping the cards though.

Never been back, never will.

The most bizarre experience at Kristy's.

Myself and a couple of friends we're walking down Richmond when i noticed a lady confined to an electric wheelchair having difficulty entering the building.

Naturally I ran over to help her with the door. Once we were in the entrance, a middle aged man opened the second door (I'm assuming this gentlemen is a manager).

As I was about to say goodbye, and thanked the man for helping with the second door, the lady said, very simply, "we had a lot of difficulty getting in here". (Which was very true. She must have been struggling for about 3 minutes in intense heat before i was able to help her).

No reply from the gentleman.

She said it again.

To which he replied "What do you expect. Should we just leave the doors wide open for you? It cost $30,000 to cool this place"

He must have thought i was her son, because half of it was directed towards myself and half of it towards the poor lady.

As an occupational therapist, it sickens me to see someone with a disability treated this way.

I apologized on behalf of the man and had to be on my way.

I've never tried the food at Kristy's, and after this brief experience, I doubt I will.

This is my favourite breakfast place in the city, and we returned this morning after not going for awhile. Certainly not fancy, but consistent, tasty, and inexpensive.

I always get the meat lover's scramble (three eggs cooked with sausage, bacon, and ham) that comes with home fries and toast.

The eggs are fresh and not overcooked, the bacon is thick-cut and delicious, ham is smoky and not deli ham, and the sausages taste fresh and home made - lots of flavour and no gristle. It's also not greasy at all.

The trick to the homefries is to ask for them well-done with onion. They come golden and crisp, and the onions are lovely and caramelly. If you don't ask for well done, they can be a bit pale and *just* cooked through.

Coffee comes in a thermal carafe and it quite good, and each meal is served with a nice chunk of orange.

(Vegan) hubby had home fries with onion and a fruit bowl (fresh strawberries, pineapple, oranges, grapes and melon) - looked awesome and not like pre-made fruit salad that's typically heavy on the honeydew. After eating some of my home fries as well, he was quite satisfied. I ended up taking half my scramble home since it was just too much food.

Quality and quantity are both there, and the total was $21.00. Not too shabby, and we will definitely be back.

Note to self: never say it doesn't matter to a friend when selecting a place for lunch.

I went in with such little expectations that it wasn't really a bad experience. It is true about what they say, I was probably the youngest person in the restaurant. However, the restaurant was quite busy just after the lunch rush.

The menu was totally unimaginative. However, items such as salsbury steak, fish and chips, quiche etc can be done poorly or done well. By enlarge, the food fared better than some of my more recent experiences.

I ordered a Julienne salad which was heaped with roast turkey, smoked ham, cheese, cucumbers, tomato etc. It's pretty basic but everything was fresh, the roast turkey was from an actual turkey and not just deli meat. Dressings were packaged but served on the side as I requested. I've had far worse salads for more money.

My lunch date had salsbury steak (not a foodie). The portion was adequate- the "steak" was served with a mushroom gravy, fries and cooked vegetables. The fries were a frozen variety but the vegetables were freshly cooked rather than some frozen mix. They were also nicely presented.

Service was very good. We didn't have to ask for refills on our drinks at all, the servers just appeared with them.

Prices are quite reasonable, which probably explains the popularity of the place. I don't think much was priced over $10 on the menu.

This would definately be a safe place to take an unadverturous eater

After seeing the line up at Baker Street around noon, we were casting about for another place for breakfast/brunch on Saturday morning so we continued driving west on Richmond Rd. and came upon Kristy’s family restaurant (yes – the very dark, carpeted restaurant with the pink sign). After quickly checking reviews on this site in the parking lot, we decided to give it a try.

We were lucky to get a table in the front room which has wrap around windows solving the “dark” aspect. As for the food, they make a pretty good western sandwich. The bacon ordered on the side could have been a little crispier but I would still put it above average. Coffee is delivered in an insulated carafe that was left on the table - taste was so-so. The service was friendly enough. I would not consider this one of the best breakfast experiences I have had – but it is on the back-up list.

It has soft lighting, a carpeted floor and lots of room around every table (to accommodate for walkers, etc.). Yes folks, this is senior central for breakfast. But they're not just coming back for the reduced chance of taking a spill getting in or out of the restaurant. The menu is pretty good. It's extensive, for one, the wait staff are very attentive, efficient and don't mind adding a little colour to your experience, and coffee is served by the carafe.

The eggs are cooked to perfection every time I go... And I've been often. Usually once a month, with friends or family.

And try the strawberry waffle, but skip the powdered sugar and ask for real maple syrup. Delish!

Each time we drove by this place on Richmond Rd, I'd say to my wife, "We really should try the breakfast there." Well, we finally went and I'm happy to have that urge out of my system.

I went for the Lumberjack Special: eggs, all meats, homefries, toast, and pancakes. The eggs were done just fine, but the meats were all kind of inferior. The homefries seemed especially bad, with too much seasoning and big chunks of undercooked sharp white onion. The pancakes were good but tiny (albeit slightly larger than they appear in this photo -- maybe 4 inches across).

Coffee was charged for on top of the meal, but it was pretty good coffee and they leave the thermal carafe at the table for you. Thumbs up for that little detail!
