We went here on Tuesday night to sample the $50 Date Night Menu. We arrived without a reservation and were seated immediately at a requested high top table. Water was served and menus brought to the table but no mention of date night options. It was definitely non-rushed as mentioned on the website!
Service was very friendly but slow. The place was about 1/3 full. Our server kept apologizing for the delays-our tea took awhile, my glass of wine arrived about 10 minutes after the order was taken. We asked for the Date Night Menu which meant another delay. Luckily we were prepared for a long, relaxing dinner.
A couple of blips with our order-date night menu includes a shared app, 2 mains and a shared dessert. We ordered the apple blue cheese salad to start. A few minutes (quite a few) after ordering we were told the supplier hadn't arrived with the blue cheese. We said fine, just leave the cheese out. They were offering goat cheese but we declined because my main had goat cheese & I didn't care to double up. Then a few minutes later they came back to say they had no apples but would substitute a main salad with goat cheese. We switched to the risotto appetizer which turned out to be fabulous. We will go back just for it-portobello,thyme, red wine risotto executed perfectly. (It might be strange to share on a 1st date though!) There are 4 appetizer options for date night.
I had the goat cheese/spinach/sun dried tomato stuffed chicken breast with tarragon sauce & the signature vegetable medley and bh had the sirloin steak (rare) with grainy mustard sauce & caesar salad. Both were excellent, his steak was cooked perfectly. There are 2 other main options. The caesar salad was ok with a nice amount of anchovies and bacon but creamier than we like. My chicken was divine and the vegetables excellent-tender crisp with bok choy, red cabbage, grilled carrots, zucchini, red pepper, squash & garlic mashed potatoes.
We opted for the creme brulee for dessert which again was excellent-it happened to be cranberry. Shared dessert is from the regular menu.
Water was topped up regularly and service was friendly, a little slow at times but generally good.
There are a few selections of white wine, one (or 2?)roses but lots of red wine. Some available by the glass, all by the bottle, no 1/2 L or L selections. Lots of cocktail options and 2 people were trying a warmed brandy snifter that looked interesting.
They seem very proud of the in house smoked menu items but not we had in mind this visit.
In spite of the blips we enjoyed our visit and will probably return. If you are in the west end/Kanata this is one of the nicer spots we have been with excellent food. The music that night was a little loud for us.
