We went there today for lunch. I had the smoked salmon crepe with butternut squash soup and hubby had the smoked ham and gruyere crepe with onion and garlic soup. They make seriously good soup, here, folks. Both were delicious, as were the crepes. There was sauted fennel and diced apple folded into the crepe and the smoked salmon with horseradish crime fraiche sat on top. Very generous servings, and very food. The ham in the crepe is "real" ham, not the processed stuff. Heartily recommend this place.

Had a lovely lunch here today while in Almonte. I don't know that I would have known to come if a friend hadn't recommended the restaurant -- it's in a "mall" on the main Mill St. in Almonte. The mall, to be fair, is an old brick building that apparently used to house the general store eighty years ago and now features small stores with a variety of well-curated homemade jewelry, clothing, art, and a great bird store (if you're in need of feed and feeders).

The Crepe Company's decor isn't flashy, and seems to have a soft spot for images of lovers in lip locks. I guess that I should have brought a date instead of my mother, but the elegant asymmetrical vases with green spider mum blooms were a welcome touch. The restaurant is licensed, and has a small, manageable menu for both lunch and dinner. Apparently they can provide gluten-free crêpes as well, and there are plenty of options for vegetarians.

Before I'd even taken my seat (shown by genuinely friendly wait-staff), a nice older gentleman leaned over to me and said, "If you don't have the mushroom soup, you're crazy."

With such an admonition, I could hardly refuse. The soup (a daily variable) was portobello and porcini with a drizzle of truffle oil and finely chopped chives. Lovely. I would have licked the bowl if my mother wasn't there. My gentleman friend had left by the time I got my soup, so I couldn't thank him for the advice.

Oh, and the soup came with a crêpe. I'm sure they market that as the other way round, but it was hard to top that soup, for sure.

My crêpe was a stunning take on goat cheese and autumn squash, with candied walnuts and sage brown butter. I'm fairly sure there was some shredded apple in there too, not mentioned on the menu, but a nice addition. ($12 for soup and crêpe)

My mother had the same thing; my sister had the Mill Street Salad, which she said was a tasty mix of greens, chèvre, pickled onion and candied walnuts, and was certainly very good-looking, the Brad Pitt of salads ($10).

Although it was a really idiotic idea because I was utterly replete, I ordered the warm almond cake with homemade vanilla ice cream and poached spiced apples (there's a picture of it on their web site). Just my kind of dessert, very moist, not too sweet. A little dollop of heaven for $7.

I don't get out to the effortlessly charming Almonte often, so I doubt this will become a regular haunt. Probably just as well: the bird feed owner said he'd put on weight since the Crêpe Company opened. All in all, this is a very nice little find that won't break the bank.
