Man food court food in Ottawa really sucks for most part. In many Asian nations its as good as what the regular restos produce, sometimes better.

I had the butter chicken plate here with side of channa masala. The chickpeas were really tasteless. I took brown rice...again not much taste to it. The salad was also quite tasteless and didn't seem that fresh. The butter chicken though was quite decent. I asked for some naan and that seemed fresh and good.

Overall though just a miss. When you spend $11 you expect a bit better.

Ever since the Polish restaurant closed, the L’esplanade foodcourt has consistently disappointed me. It’s obviously full every noonhour, so people must like what is offered there, so take my comment with a grain of salt. I used to patronize this little Indian restaurant as I thought the value was good and the food was tasty. That was before I was really exposed to amazing Indian food during my travels.

My favourite Indian dish is channa masala so I thought I would grab that at ‘Made in India’. It is really, really good value. You get rice (not basmati unfortunately), curry, a little salad, and a soup for $5.46. But you get what you pay for I suppose. I remembered this place being better, but the channa masala was virtually tasteless. No heat, no sweatness, no pungent spices, hardly any sauce and there was no shred of tomato – thus not a very authentic channa massala (but I’m no expert so, excuse my commentary). Essentially, it was over cooked, dry-ish chickpeas on uncle bens rice, with iceburg salad and papdum crumbs. This meal would be very good for people who are wimps when it comes to Indian food, but at the same time, I thought it was tasteless not just light on the spices.

With it I had the malgatawny (sp) soup. The soup was in fact very good. Nice dose of coconut and very flavourful. I remember the dhal being very good here too.

I might try this place again. The owner is a nice guy and there are quite a few options. I just have to be careful how everything is plated. Maybe he just skimped on the sauce and thus I was left with underwhelming dryness. I actually poured half my soup on the channa and rice so that I could finish the meal.

I do find it weird that they do not serve basmati. I think that is essential, and the fact they don’t serve it is a big turn of for me.
