Foods from Anwar's Kitchen

We had seen the smiling face of the owner on the sign several times and decided to make a group event of going to check the place out.

A friend called to make reservations; Anwar asked if we wanted to order the food ahead of time. We did not. On arrival, it was clearly much more set up for takeout, but there were several small tables pushed together to accommodate the 8 of us.

We ordered: butter chicken (two orders on Anwar's recommendation), vegetable biryani, shrimp bhuna, kafta kebab, channa masala and chicken tandoori. He also brought us salad (came with), naan bread (came with), steamed rice (no charge), and a rubbermaid container of a beef dish I can't remember the name of that he had in the fridge (no charge).

The butter chicken rivals Little India Cafe's butter chicken. The shrimp bhuna was AMAZING.

The atmosphere was great, too. Anwar cooked for a good 45 minutes before we got to eat and then while we were eating, played host. He told us stories of his children and grandchildren, how he learned the recipes of his dishes, some of his loyal customers, and was attentive to our needs.

We want to have an Anwar's pizza party in the future to try his various indian-themed pizzas on the menu.

Go.

Apparently it really wasn't open when my wife and I arrived Saturday at 12:30. His 'official' opening isn't until tomorrow.

He opened the door and welcomed us in... apologized a lot that he really didn't have much to offer us. We said we were not picky, what did he have... he almost sold us on Chicken Tikka until he mentioned he had just finished up a big pot of Lamb Biryani. Sold... it was great. He threw in a Kafka as well, as my wife was worried about how spicy it would be. Fabulous spicy rice, nice potatoes. Lining the outside of the plate was a salad of Tomatoes and Cucumbers.

He actually sat down with the kitchen staff and had the same meal as us, all be it, a couple of tables away. ( we had the place to ourselves).

The place wasn't dirty.. but it wasn't sparkling either.. likely due to the fact they really weren't OPEN for business yet.

A warning.. the bathrooms are down a flight of stairs(narrow) and along a hallway past some shady rooms... all poorly lit.

Who cares what the place looked like... the food was awesome.
