Here are some observations from a foodie that is new to the city
1. Sushi is disappointing in this city. Not because we're not on a coast, but because the expectations of what "good sushi" is is really low. I've had great sushi in Kitchener and Waterloo. I travel a lot and sushi staple on business trips so I've had the full range. It's no Vancouver or San Francisco.
2. Shawarma. I used to hate shawarma before I came to this city. Most places serve mediocre shawarma, but this hole-in-the-wall Castle Shawarma on Rideau is really good. Get the spicy humus. Price is great and it's well done.
3. Pub style food rules in this city, but oddly enough no great chicken wing place. There are however some excellent pubs:
Chez Lucien - small menu but great burgers. Personal favourite is salmon burger with dill cream cheese
Leutenant's Pub
Quinns
The pubs in the market tend to be too touristy and not that great. Try the Clockwork pub in other parts
