Mohnstollen - German poppyseed stollen [General]

2015 Nov 13
If anyone comes across this Christmas bread at a bakery can you let it be known here? Thanks!

Did you by chance try Swiss Pastry?

No I haven't - I haven't ventured near SP for a while but I'll be at Carlingwood this week so I'll see if they have any there.

Andy It would be best to try Swiss Pastries first since I am almost certain they would have what you are looking for. Since I am not familiar with Mohnstollen I took the liberty of looking on google images. I am not entirely sure this is what you are looking for but the Rideau Bakery makes a darn good poppyseed bread... (And something more familiar to me thanks to the Czech side of my family...) The bread part almost looks like a challah and of course it has a thick poppy seed filling.

Stubbe has Stollen with almonds and marzipan.

Rideau bakery always has a poppyseed roll, kind of thing year round.

Polka Deli on Bank st gets some cakes and pastries with poppyseed in them and they get their items from Wawel bakery and another place in Montreal.
I was told you can always request an item and they can get it for you.

If you want to do your own baking, nuts.com sells the poppyseed filling and other fillings for holiday baking.nuts.com

I might try making it someday but want to try it first. I already make my own "German" stollen so no need to buy Stubbe's though I wouldn't mind trying theirs.
Is the Polka Deli on Bank or Walkley?

I was at Red Apron and True Loaf on Gladstone yesterday and True Loaf had some stollen (not sure what type) for $15.

Andy, If you're not stollen-ed out yet, just took this photo at Sobeys - 193 Metcalfe Street at Lisgar. Not sure on quality and I am pfeffernüssed-out so passed :) but...Mohn Stollen 5.99 500g
Side note: Was my first time in to explore this store and was pleasantly surprised at the selection.

Frozen mohnstollen? That looks interesting - thanks AMR! I've never seen it frozen so that's good to see; I've some frozen fruit stollen leftover from my Xmas baking that I know we'll enjoy a lot as each loaf is pulled out this year. Our Xmas cookies will sadly be gone today or tomorrow and we'll miss them a lot until the next Xmas baking season.

The photo does look a bit icy (?)…but no, not frozen - just in a sealed foil bag.
