jackfruit [General]

Green Fresh on Montreal and Vanier have them. They usually get in a batch on Thursday or Friday.
I think I'm addicted to them.
Here is what I've learned so far:
Find one that gives a bit when you push in on the darker spots. If it's all green and hard it's not ready and it will have latex that gums up your knife.
It should have a fruity smell. Different people smell different things. I smell mango / banana when I smell them.
The ones at Green Fresh come from Mexico. I saw the box when the guy was stocking them.
You can eat the seeds if you boil them. Kind of like chestnuts.
The rope or rag - the white stuff around the yellow / orange pulp - can be eaten. It can also be cooked in a rice cooker and then fermented to wine with the starch converting yeast balls.
I think the rope or rag can be turned into vegan pulled pork too.
It was $2 / lb, but it's down to $1.49 / lb now. Must be in season.
If you are just going after the "fruit" you will only get about half the weight in fruit.
If you freeze it in a zip lock bag, it's kind of like ice cream. It's delicious frozen.
You can also dehydrate it to chips, but they also sell jackfruit chips at Green Fresh. Dehydrating yourself only makes sense if you have lots of extra produce. Buying fruit to dehydrate is not cost effective.
