Importing Foodie Things From The USA [General]

2007 Oct 11
Hi Foodies Purchasing Food and Cookware in the USA:

Because I purchase many items from the USA (and regularly cross the border at Ogdensburg to mail my USA seed orders), I have all my USA orders shipped to the UPS office there.

It will cost you a $5.00 handling fee to pick it up, but far less than the ridiculous differential between shipping costs to Canada/USA.

When making your purchase, use your own name, but make it c/o the following:

c/o UPS Store
2981 Ford St. Extension
Ogdensburg, NY
13669-3474
USA

Phone: 315-393-1188

You all probably know this already.

Yup, always a good option if the differential is greater than the cost of gas (and your time). I've done it a few times. Note there's also a 2 or 3 buck bridge toll each way too, isn't there?

Total cost:
Time
Gas
$3.00 bridge toll to cross border EACH way.
$5.00 UPS Fee

It's worth it if you are going anyway.
Or if you are being charged ridiculous amounts for shipping to Canada (which is often the case), and the alternative is often free shipping to anywhere in the USA. Plus the customs/duties payable on top of it all if it is shipped directly to you.

I find that even if an item is declared at the Canadian border---under $100 (or even higher) value they rarely even bother to send you inside to pay taxes or duty.
