Oktoberfest weekend [Events]
2013 Sep 29
My friend and I had a great time. We left my place around 2 and got on site around 3:30. That's the bus for ya.
Lots of tents, lots of loos for those who needed to use them, a whole lot of beer and a fair offering of food.
I found the wood-fired pizza and the Indian restaurant (Karara) a bit out of place, but then again I didn't find any place serving chicken either.
The Glen Scottish Pub was there in their gigantic trailer, serving deep fried haggis and fish and chips platters. They had sausage on a bun as well, but NO MUSTARD ANYWHERE! I know the Scots drown everything in ketchup, but ... come on.
I had a passable pork hock from the Royal Oak. It was cooked perfectly and laid on a small bed of sauerkraut, but didn't even come with a bun. I'd call it a snack.
The Rocky Mountain company was selling schnitzel on a bun as fast as they could and had a huge line. It looked pretty good.
Spuds had an Oktoberfest poutine that came with a small sausage with sauerkraut and mustard on it. Delicious all the way to the bottom.
The sponsor's 'midway' truck from Schneiders had a little bit of everything. I was dismayed that their warm pretzel was simply the NY Pretzel Company pre-frozen pretzels. This was small, and only barely passable with a crapload of mustard.
The main stage was really grinding along from the moment we showed up. Lots of good music to help fill the air.
The Big Rig tent was rockin' with Shteve unt der Lederhosers. We helped to get everyone in the spirit of things. They had a Gold, Brown, and Heffweizen on tap. I liked the brown.
In the Hogsback tent, there were some interesting acts playing covers of familiar songs. Barrhaven Brown, something else and one more that was not listed anywhere. It was a coconut pale ale. I was pretty sure they had tricked me at first, but after a couple of sips I could certainly taste the subtle flavour of toasted coconut. Very nice in an ale.
I had a couple of mugs of the Waupoos cider because I really like it. It's smooth and tastes lightly of apples, not overpoweringly like some. I find it refreshing and started and ended my day with it.
We didn't spend a lot of time in the Beau's tent. Their offerings just didn't appeal to me much.
Met a lot of people there I knew, made a lot of new friends. It was definitely worth my time. A brilliant, sunny day where it wasn't too hot. Fantastic.

My friend and I are going on Saturday and plan to have a ball.
BTW, tickets are 25% off at WagJag.com. I've never used this service, but my friend is picking them up from there.
