Looking for Concord grapes & Yellow corn [Food/Vendor]

2013 Aug 25
Hi all

I'm looking for Concord grapes and yellow corn in the Ottawa area... much prefer them to the Coronation grapes and yellow/white corn that are now sold. Anyone know places that sell them?

Thanks!

One of the stalls in the Byward Market sells Concord grapes - I am munching on a few right as we speak. Warner Farms used to sell them at the Ottawa Farmers Market but I haven't been since they moved to Brewer Park. Maybe other ottawafoodies can confirm or deny if they are still there?

As for the yellow/white corn it seems to be available at most farmers markets.

Thanks for the tips for the grapes :) The Ottawa Farmers Market... is this what you mean? Sorry, I don't know Ottawa much:

As for the corn, it is the opposite I seek, the "old" just yellow corn :)Maybe they will have it at one of those markets.

Thanks!

Try Hudsons for yellow corn. They've had it in past years. They are at the Carp Market. Or they have a farm stand at the corner of Upper Dywer Hill Road and Panmure Road. According to Mrs. Hudson, the reason it is hard to find yellow corn is because of comsumer demand. Most people want the super sweet varieties.

Lorraine Yes the link you posted above is the right farmers market. It's really big and I am sure you have lots of fun exploring. Sorry about the corn advice - it was a misunderstanding on my part-;) I haven't seen the plain old just yellow corn in ages - maybe you could try the markets that lovetoeat recommended? Happy shopping!

We just bought yellow corn from Hudson's at the Carp Farmer's Market this past Saturday.. $6 for 13 cobs amd have already eaten a bunch of it. It is excellent.

The Brewer Park/Landsdowne Market has both when they're in season. Saw yellow corn and concorde grape juice this past weekend. Wasn't looking for concorde grapes specifically so i can only confirm they had some form of purple grape that looked like concordes.

Just saw packs of ontario concord grapes at Loblaws Merivale for around $4.

On another post on this forum someone is trying to give them away.

Yellow corn lover here too - I know that "peaches and cream" can be good but it can also be awful (same goes for yellow corn, mind you, I just like the deeper colour; I'm so shallow!). Mine is mostly in the freezer now as it's just today past it's peak - still excellent flavour and sweetness, but the kernel's texture is just starting to show it's age today. This last patch was planted June 2 (Stokes Vision supersweet); still a few days of quality eating but not much longer here. Should still be some good yellow corn out there...

Andy, did you blanch your corn first?

2013 Aug 29
Yes, I did - 3 min.

Thank you for all your tips, everyone... I will go to these stores and markets with high hopes :)

Andy, I find the peaches & cream corn way too bland and sweet, the yellow I have found in the past has been more flavourful... with old-style toned down sweetness. I should freeze some as you have done :)

As a matter of fact I find way too many foods are sweeter and sweeter, and thought I was going nuts for a while until I heard of studies confirming that very fact. Even 30-40 years ago, European companies used to make specially sweetened batches of foods for the North American market, and the trend seems to be expanding (and putting our health at risk). I've asked my library to get me this book by Michael Moss to find out more:

Last week I had sardines with multi whole grain bread, and the bread was so sweet it was awful. I also bought Maillé Old fashioned Mustard for the first time in a few years... same thing, much sweeter than before. It's not my personal food style.

Now, what to have for supper? :)

Thanks everyone :)

This from a poster on Ottawa Freecycle on FB:

We have lots of grapes (LOTS) on offer. Concord grapes are
great for eating, juice, jelly and wine among other things.

We have about 16 bushels of grapes growing above our
driveway (that's about 400 litres or 160 gallons of juice).

If you're interested in picking any, email me
(richthomas1008@gmail.com) and we can set things up.
