Wolf v. Dacor v. Thermador [General]

2012 Oct 29
We are in the midst of a kitchen reno and, as part of the short term pain, we have decided to upgrade our range. We are settled on dual fuel with convection oven but I am torn between these three brands. The online reviews are useful but no clear choice emerges. We do a lot of baking so a consistent oven is important but also good stovertop performance with quick boil for the days when the kids just have to have their pasta asap. Any thoughts, opinions about the brands? Thanks!

Have you looked at Blue Star? It is available at C.A. Paradis and is what I'd be buying if I went that far. Not cheap, certainly. A more commercial brand and one that I'd still be willing to see in my kitchen.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check them out this weekend but my understanding is that Blue Star does not have a dual fuel option.

If you want dual fuel, and want more choices, why not look at separate gas cooktop and wall-mount ovens? I love the fact I don't have to bend down to use my wall-mount oven.

We did a reno about 4 years ago and put in a Dacor double oven (wall) and Dacor cooktop. The cooktop was fine but I had load of problems with the Dacor oven. Main electronic panel went and had to be replaced and then after the warranty was over the panel clock numbers started to burn out. Annoying although not a huge deal. I did find the ovens not very reliable temperature wise. One ran much hotter than the other, though neither came up to temp properly. Always had to adjust.
I have since moved and in the new place have put in a GE Cafe dual fuel slide in range. So far I like it much better. Oven is more accurate. Now this one has a small lower oven drawer that bakes up to 400 and I haven't tried it yet. I have to say though I do miss the wall oven aspect. Nice to have the oven up high.
So all that being said I would personally not buy a Dacor oven again.

I can't speak for those brands, but I'm delighted with the Kenmore Pro dual fuel I bought three years ago.

I'll jump in and slam Dacor too. We bought their dual-fuel stove about 12 years ago, and our electronic panel has been flaky for most of that time and the oven temperature seems to be unreliable as well. The gas cooktop is great though -- big 15,000 BTU burners and that cool reignite-when-blown-out feature.

I seem to remember Ron Eade had the same stove as mine and also had a number of complaints about it.

Thanks for the comments although given that my wife is leaning toward the Dacor largely because of the better preheat time for the oven and the better burners (than the Wolf) the negative comments are a bit troubling. I am going to try to find more reviews online. After another visit to Universal Appliances, we have ruled out the Thermador but now the GE Monogram is a possible choice as they have a great deal on it, for about 2K less than list price. I like the oven size and the cooktop grates but worry about the burner size as it only has one high powererd burner. My wife is also not sold on three telescoping racks, as they seem hard to adjust.
