Site outage planned for Tuesday 2012-Jul-03 [Site]

2012 Jun 29
I received notice from my hosting provider that OttawaFoodies will be moving to a brand new server on Tuesday morning. This is scheduled to take place at 09:30 UTC (05:30 EDT) and should go fairly quickly but anything can happen. So please be patient if you can't access the site right away on Tuesday morning.

The new server is expected to be much faster, which should translate to a noticeable improvement in user experience. :-)

Hurray! Faster is always better, right?

That's what I always tell the ladies.

Oddly enough, ever since you posted that I'm getting a whole crapload of gimpy page loads where I get the Web faction default page - I hope the change tomorrow fixes that

Coming soon: Another fine website hosted by WebFaction.

If you are the owner of this website and weren’t expecting to see this message, here are some potential causes and solutions:

You recently created a new website record, but opened the URL before your changes were activated in the web server and DNS configuration. Wait a moment and refresh.
You created a new website record without the current subdomain (for example, www). Return to the control panel to add the current subdomain to the website record and refresh.
Your account has been disabled because of a billing issue, TOS or AUP violation, or some other problem.
You added a new domain in the control panel but didn’t create a site record to link it with an application. Create a website record with the control panel and refresh.
Your website record is set for HTTPS, but you visited a HTTP URL (or vice-versa). Open the URL with the other protocol.
You tried to access your website by IP address. Access the website by domain name instead.

Oh yeah, and a bunch of these too - whenever I try to actually post something

Crap that's probably my fault. I put in the new A record for DNS already and maybe your system isn't favoring the first one in the list. Yes, it should clear up tomorrow, when I will remove the defunct a record!

I disabled the new record so it should work again. I'll flip it over manually tomorrow morning -- a quick google suggested that redundant A records would result in a round-robin attempt, but I guess the fact that Webfaction puts up a valid default page messes that approach up!

What are you using for a TTL? (He asks, without bothering to look it up :-))

Typically for something like this I'd lower the TTL to a minute or two 48 hours before the switch, then switch, and jack it back up again afterwards.

That's the low-tech way anyway. I'm sure there are cleaner, more elaborate mechanisms which can be employed

I'm using a 1 hour TTL. Sure, I could do what you're saying but since I'm not the one making the switch I'd have to be trying continuously starting at 5:30am tomorrow morning. I need my beauty sleep!

I'll switch it over when I wake up tomorrow. If all goes well it will be working by the time most people grab a coffee and sit down at their miserable desks to see what people ate this weekend.

:-)

Oh yeah good point if you don't know when the switch will happen.

Hmm... seems like it still hasn't switched. I'll check it periodically during my OC Transpo commute.

We are up and running on the new server now. All should be welllll....

Sadly I don't think it has gotten any faster.

But it has been slower too so I guess it is all relative :-)

Not terrible in any case.
