mussel pearls [Cooking]

made some mussels tonight. it seems like every second mussel had sand in it.. finally i was able to spit out and see what I had been crunching on. i found a super small pearl, less than 1 mm diameter. and all this time I thought it was sand? anyway.. anybody know how common are these pearls, it's a real turn off.

I think powdered perl is reputed to be an anti-ageing thing. It probably won't do you any harm, unless you chip a tooth on it.

Sold on amazon $45 for 3 oz.

I'd say it' very rare with PEI mussels - we go through lots in my house and hardly ever run in to sandy/pearled mussel
