au pied de cochon - burp [General]

Actually it is amazing & I didn’t find it expensive...5 of us 2 bottles of Wine, Apps ( we had Lot of Apps), Mains & dessert for just under $ 500, less than you would pay @ few comparable spots in Ottawa.
One of my favourite was the Foie Gras Cromesquis ; little seasoned cubes served piping hot on a skillet, pop one in your mouth & it EXPLODES with incredible rich flavours so hot you can hardly stand it BUT you won’t let a drip escape or dilute it with cold water because it’s just that good.
From the genuine 'happy to see you' smiles to the incredibly knowledgeable & professional service, the food & the vibe it is an experience that every lover of rich food should try & it’s in Montreal too boot.

If I could give more than one thumb up to Terry's post I would.
Last time we were there we ordered a round of cromesquis.
One minute after they hit the table (the server suggested a brief cooling time) we popped them in our mouths, bit down, and watched as our eyes went wide as saucers.
It's not that often I use the word "delightful" to describe a dish, but it was probably the most delightful thing I've ever eaten.

Doh! now I have to return! I would add that perhaps the pricing is a bit more than some places it certainly is the realm of what I'd consider quite reasonable. When you see the amount of staff attending you wonder how they break even. Our bill, including 3 drinks each was 150 before tax/tip. Probably the thing with the biggest markup were the non-beer drinks. (12 for the cocktail, 11/11.5 for wine by the glass, beer was only 5). I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I think the value at APDC is great considering what you get. I have been countless times and spent in the range of 75-100 dollars for two with some drinks. That usually translates to cromesquis and either 4 apps or 2 apps and a shared main. This amount of the food has always been more than sufficient and God knows how many times I have spent nearly the same amount at a mediocre pub or chain joint when faced with limited other options.

It's true! I really don't know how they can serve so much good food for so little money!
Our bill was in-line with what you all have experienced. Four of us got cromesquis, 2 apps, 4 mains, dessert, and a bottle of wine for $205 after tip.
And the pied de cochon I ordered fed my wife and me for another two meals, not to mention the mileage we got out of the happy pork chop.
The other great part of eating there is that everybody is just so happy to be there. We went at 10:30 on a Wednesday night and the place was packed with smiling faces, both on the patrons and on the servers.
I'd actually consider going back to Montreal in the summer, just to eat there, and just to get the massive seafood platter!

au pied de cochon is great, usually go every time i am in montreal... u can try the pig head for two next time, though it probably would feed 4... the seafood platter, not so impressed with it, not sure if it is an off night but the oysters had a lot of shell in it and didnt seem that great when compared to the fatty porky/ducky stuff

For drinks, I stuck with beer, and my wife had an super tasty raspberry mojito (lots of fresh raspberries and mint). Then she moved on to a couple of wines by the glass, 1 white, 1 red.
We started with cod fritters, beautiful cod nuggets served in a paper cone, mayo on the side. For apps, my wife had crispy PDC salad, which included greens, crispy pork bits, some kind of tomato relish, and a pork croquette.
I had a mind blowing app! Beef (maybe bison?) bone marrow, served with morels, the thinnest wafer of toast, parsley and demi-glaze. Wow - one of the best things I've never had before.
We then moved on to a palate cleanser - splitting the foie-gras poutine. OK, maybe more of a gut buster than a plate cleanser. This was ok - it tasted good, and I would have appreciated it more, if I was hungrier. Given everything else we were eating, it was probably overload.
For mains my wife had the ribs, served with PDC mashed potatoes, fiddle heads, and asparagus. My main was PDC Melting pot - which was mashed potatoes with some kind of cheese (I think - there wasn't a description on the menu), served with boudin, pork belly, sausage and some other piece of pork (unknown origin, looked like loin).
I had hoped for dessert, but I couldn't make it through my main - luckily they provided doggy bags, and the hotel had a fridge in the room. It was an amazing experience, with amazing staff. The number of staff and watching them operating together was incredible. We were lucky enough to be sitting near the seafood station in the front. They worked really hard, and it was fun to see the 4 tier seafood extravaganza put together and brought out (I believe this caused some bell ringing, and cheers from the staff).
I would love to go back and can't recommend it highly enough for any ottawa foodie to go and experience at least once. The food is heavy, delicious and very well prepared. The atmosphere is casual, fun and loud. The service is top notch.
