A quote from the article which is something Stephen Beaumont (www.worldofbeer.com) repeated several times at the even I attended with him a few weeks ago :
"Beer has a much, much wider range of flavours than wine does"
The reason that Stephen gave is simply that beer has more ingredients than wine, so you have potential for more flavours. Wine == grapes. Beer == grain + hops. You have a choice of grains, as well as a choice of how each one is malted and then latter kilned. And a wide choice of hops as well.
Far more variables going in == far more flavours coming out.
