Diabetic friendly treats [General]

2018 Sep 8
Hi foodies,

In the past at work when we've had things to celebrate I've brought in cakes/cookies etc. for the team. I've been able to successfully navigate nut, gluten & dairy allergies with my "go to" Thyme & Again.

However I've recently acquired a couple of diabetics in the group and now I'm at a bit of a loss. Asked at T&A and they said they don't have anything suitable.

I guess there are those 'edible creations' things made out of fruit, but even they could have a high glycemic index.

So, any thoughts out there of suitable treats for my diabetic colleagues?

Cheers,
Ratty.

Gourmet olives!

You didn't mention vegetarian/vegan/sodium restrictions, so I'd suggest a savoury spread of really nice deli meats and olives. Smoked salmon. Beef jerky. Blistered shishito/Padrón peppers.

Cutting out gluten, nuts, dairy, and high-GI foods pretty much skewers any chance of traditonal celebratory fare. Places that do sugar free treats aren't usually nut free, and vice versa. Sweet treats without nuts, dairy, gluten, or sugar aren't really treats at all—one could even consider them to be a sort of punishment for those without dietary restrictions. 😆

A systematic approach would start with separating the serious allergies (anaphylactic/celiac) from the preferences (gluten/lactose/sugar/meat intolerant). Now take the list of all possible celebratory foods and remove those that would cause serious allergies. From the remaining options, choose some that will appeal to the masses. Then add in special options for each of the preference/intolerance groups.

Best of luck!

Hi, I'm Type2 diabetic and generally if we have a celebratory cake, it's always cake where I work, and I know about it in advance I can plan my daily meals to accommodate a small piece. If it is a surprise event, after lunch, I'll usually just pass and celebrate with a cup of coffee.

Have you spoken with the individuals concerned? We all react a little differently to different foods, french fries are an absolute no-no for me, so the individuals would be best positioned to tell you what they can and cannot have.

Malak pastry on Bank st can make baklava with Maltitol instead of sugar, the owner was telling me he thought of making some as someone in his family is diabetic.

But he does not make this every day, so you have to call and ask.

Stubbe chocolates has some sugar-free chocolate bars.

Whole Foods should have a good selection of sugar-free candy and food also.

"good selection" yes.
Whether any of it is actually good, however...
