Oct 4: International Food & Drink Soirée [Events]
2014 Oct 6
So this event was well attended but a bit of a flop from a foodie perspective. Of the 40 vendors there, no more than a quarter were selling food. The longest lineup was for "Petit Peru" as they had an interesting menu with reasonable-ish prices. A friend admitted that, during his sheep-like shuffle to the front of the line, he contemplated just leaving and walking across the Byward Market to visit the actual restaurant instead. ;-)
Incredibly, there was a reasonably long line of people willing to drop $4 for 2-3 oz of Haveli's butter chicken with a little triangle of pita bread, or $2 for a cocktail size samosa. The only food I purchased was Chef Justin Scott's mutton stew... $5 for a nice chunky portion. Stew is a safe bet in the kept-warm-at-a-convention-centre realm.
I stayed for a couple of hours, mostly chatting with the charming foodieprints.com duo, who had attended to promote their new book.
Then I left and went to Milestones for the rest of dinner. The poblano soup was not good but the Korean style ribs were quite excellent.
