Kinki Brunch [Food/Vendor]

2007 Jan 15
Oh dear!

We have enjoyed visiting Kinki since the restaurant opened a few years ago, normally ordering off the happy hour & regular menus. So when we received an email invitation a few days ago to sample their new brunch, we were happy to give it a try. A "twisted brunch" sounded intriguing. Better yet, a 2-for-1 coupon worth $15 sweetened the idea. Our experience on Sunday was akin to attending a party that the hosts had completely forgotten. We had even called to reserve the day before.

To begin with, there was nobody in sight when we arrived. After a few awkward minutes, the sushi chef signalled from behind his bar to please take any seat we wished. At least three tables had reserved signs on them.

After a short while, one frazzled new waitress appeared with menus and an offer of coffee. 27 minutes later the coffee arrived. Other guests began to arrive and stood in the entryway ungreeted. Shortly, the restaurant was more than half full and one of Kinki's regular waitresses came in through the front door and began to assist on the floor with orders. This alleviated some of the backlog, but resulted in our own order being shuffled to the bottom of the deck. We were dismayed to watch our much more recently seated neighbours being served up 2 plates of sushi, while we awaited our omlette and sandwich from the hot kitchen.

Finally - 54 minutes after our arrival - the food was on the table: a Monte Cristo Sandwich which had not been dipped in egg, but instead had been dry toasted on the grill not long enough even to melt the cheese; an Amigos Omelet with shrimp and herbs was better, but the guacamole and Pico de Gallo arrived as an afterthought, 5 minutes later. The potato medalions were very tasty. The chicken apple sausage was stone cold and dried out - awful.

We had also placed one order of kinki crab hand roll which was finally served 1 hour and 20 minutes after we were seated. It had been sliced into 5 pieces - not the 2 cone shaped hand rolls that we had requested.

Overall, our visit to Kinki this weekend ranks with some of our worst experiences in food & service anywhere. We were shocked! If anyone is considering "Twisted Brunch" at Kinki, we recommend giving them a few more weeks to untwist their kinks!
