Known around New York City as "Portuguese Muffins" and used as buns in high end burger joints.

I brought some of these back from Connecticut last year. larger, denser and sweeter than an English muffin. So nice toasted! Has anyone found them locally yet?

Estoril Bakery is apparently no longer in operation. Tried Portuguese Bakery and no luck. Thanks anyway!

Try Estoril Bakery (89, rue Eddy) they are Azorean.
I'm actually off to the Azores (San Miguel)for a month next week. Can't wait. The food will be epic.
FF, if you liked the mainland, the Azores is really special. It's a cross between mainland Portugal and Hawaii, with a little North America thrown in.

More info (and a recipe) here: choponionsboilwater.blogspot.com

The fact that they're from the Azores explains why I've never encountered them in Portugal.

they are not sweet muffins but more like big 'english muffins' -- hugely popular in NYC! I have a receipe for a portobello burger on.... can you help?
