The Aulde Dubliner sits in Byward Market just beside The Highlander Pub. I have been here before a couple of times (once with my wife) but only for drinks and never a meal. On this trip to Ottawa, I planned to have a steak as at least one of my restaurant experiences and, after working up a thirst shopping in the Market for a couple of hours, I decided to stop at this place for lunch…

The Meal
10oz boneless Wellington County rib eye steak ... Rating 2 out of 5

Overall
The meal portion of my experience at The Aulde Dubliner Pub was a definite disappointment but I am still not inclined to review the place to harshly for a number of reasons. First, I had excellent and friendly service and enjoyed a nice relaxing time with good beer in very pleasant surroundings. Secondly, I am cognizant of the fact that I ordered a steak in a pub rather than a proper steakhouse and one cannot reasonably expect the quality to be quite the same, especially given the difference in price. Lastly, I saw quite a few other meals being served and all looked very nice (especially the fish and chips) and the other patrons seemed to eat them with enjoyment. Ultimately, I am prepared to mark this particular steak experience as just being an unfortunate aberration and not let it stop me from returning in the future. Rating 3 out of 5

I ate the "Bytown Breakfast" here on Sunday.

First off: coffee required 3 creamers and 1/2 packet of sugar -- translation: I didn't enjoy it.

The breakfast came suspiciously quickly, I was only about halfway through the coffee when it was placed in front of me. Eggs, good but tasted of orange from being crowded onto a smallish plate (they were sitting on the garnish). Sausages, stone cold and not very tasty. Potatoes...deep fried....why do all these fake Irish pubs deep fry their breakfast potatoes?

Still looking for a good breakfast place in the Market/Rideau area. And yes, Cora's has good food, but I don't always want "brunchy" stuff.

Learning to take your own advice can be challenging...some may say I'm a slow learner, but I like to think I'm an optimist. For example: maybe the bad wings were just the particular flavour I ordered, so why not try the medium? Beacuse they're not medium...or great. They were more of a BBQ mesquite. A friend of mine always gets the hot wings, so I tried one. They were alright. What you would expect for hot wings, still on the small side. I think I'm going to consider this as a "lesson learned" experience...no more wings for me.

I enjoy the atmosphere in the Pour House/Aulde Dubliner and love the balconies in the summer. I was intrigued a few weeks ago by the Guinness-BBQ wings. As a lover of Guinness, I was curious to see how the combination would taste...unfortunately, I was disappointed. The wings were quite small, like something you may purchase frozen in a box from the grocery store. They were also incredibly saucy, which I ordinarily wouldn't mind, but there was such a strong smokey flavour to them, I couldn't finish them. The Pour House doesn't currently have a wing night, and I wouldn't want pay full price for wings from there again. I have ordered other food from their menu in the past and have generally been satisfied - don't go for the wings.

Wing Size: 4/10
Flavour: 4/10
Recommended Beer: Keiths IPA - The Sauce is so heavy, you definitely don't want to wash it down with a Guinness

I was quite impressed with the Fish and Chips ($15) here. A large hunk of succulent cod with a nice crunchy-tangy beer batter on a pile of good fries. One could get a second piece of cod for a very reasonable $5 extra if one were so inclined.

The pint of Kilkenny rounded out the whole experience, as it would my waistline were I to seek out such a glorious feast with greater frequency.

Nicely presented and tasting pretty good too, this Irish Cobb Salad ($15) features an interesting array of matchstick ingredients including apple! The decidedly non-Irish Scotch Egg was a nice touch although it didn't have much in the way of flavour. So say yes to the pepper and enjoy this fresh feast!
