You are obviously right Tina. Although I don't usually shy away from confrontation, I confess that I fear the ladies who work at Patate Doree. The language barrier doesn't help either.

I'm moving out of Hull in September, so I can honestly say I have had some fantastic fries from this place; but now that I'm moving, I won't miss this place based on that experience.

Um... Those look really gross. I would hope, grumpy or not, that you can always exchange undercooked fries??? I've never heard of pouring gravy into a paper bag :S

I went to Patate Doree for some fries and gravy and it was the worst fries and gravy I have ever had.

I have to reconsider my previous review, since the fries today were undercooked (even though they were double fried), there were a few hairs in my fries (gross), the gravy was thin and definitely made of powder and they put my fries in a paper bag, then decided to pour gravy in the paper bag. In this way, the paper disintegrated, made my hands all greasy, and I had to pick pieces of paper out of my fries.

I didn't finish this monstrosity since the undercooked fries + gravy made a sort of poutine soup.

Nasty!

I would have complained, but I was already around the corner and I know it's not a good idea for an Anglophone to complain to the very curt french ladies who work at La Patate Doree.

I thought I would counter balance my last post on La Belle Verte with a picture of the poutine and hotdogs from La Patat Doree - which is right across the road on Eddy St.

See my post below for a more detailed review. Pictured here is a fuzzy cell phone shot of the family size poutine and a hull hotdog – also known as a steamy. Note *I would never eat a family poutine on my own* shudder*. This picture is a few months old, but this place is very consitent. Again I will reiterate that in the world of food, nasty hotdogs, and fried potatoes with gravy and cheese are perhaps the poorest choice of food a human can make. There is no saving grace here. Once you have committed to eating these monstrosities, there is no turning back. You have to live with your terrible decision. I make a lot of ‘terrible decisions’.
I can't help it that these foods taste so good even though we know they are terribe.

For me, I just promise to go to La Belle Verte the next time I need a restaurant/take out fix.

10 dollars for a family size poutine is the best value you can find anywhere in Ottawa. Not to mention that La Patat Doree serves very good poutine (definitely top 3 in Ottawa). The gravy is very, very good and the fries are double fried. What can be better? Coronary artery disease maybe?

The steamies are a dollar or two, I don’t remember. They are topped with the usual mustard ketchup and coleslaw. Om nom nom, delicious, mechanically separated mystery meat(s) with a side of nitrates. Delicious.

But in all seriousness, this restaurant is really good if you want to indulge in your very guilty pleasures. Skip the burgers though (see below). Also, I reccomend leaving your jacket in the car, 3 minutes inside, and you have soiled your clothes with oil smell. Not a good scene. Similarly, just a word of warning, I recommend speaking French at his establishment, as I find the service, and friendless changes on account of the language used to order. As an Anglophone who hardly speaks any French, I have learned to order my poutine and hot dog in French for this very reason.

It’s a whole cultural experience, Quebec ‘cuisine’ + language lessons. That makes me a happy camper.

I live around the corner for La Patate Doree. You are very right when you say their fries are great. They double fry them! However I always feel gross and disgusting afterwords - and thats not a commentary on the restaurant, just the - as you put it - heart busting quality of La Patate Doree.

I havn't had thr hot dog, but I have had the poutine, and the hamburg (as they call it in Quebec). Its an amazing poutine especially if you add bacon on it. I will write a more detailed account of the pountine in the coming months. Again - utterly dangerous for people looking after their heart. The burgers should be skipped.

It is unseasoned fresh ground beef that they stick on a grill. I find that it doesn't stay together and they usually under cook it. I'm okey with medium burgers but not from a hole in the wall like patate doree. Thus all you taste is the toppings which are great (standard burger toppings), but meh.

I'll have to give their dogs a try, but I can vouche for the fries and poutine which are damn good and pretty cheep.

:D hurray for Quebec cuisine!

If you're in Hull - and looking for a fabulous hot dog - and dynamite frites - look no further than La Patate Doree at Eddy and Papineau. Ever since my Montreal days, I have been crazy for the steamed hotdog, soft white bun - all dressed, with crispy, vinegary coleslaw and bright yellow mustard. And those super crispy, twice (at least!) dipped fries. It's not for the faint of heart - nor the weak of heart!

The two older women working behind the counter were super-nice and kept smiling at me - as it was obvious that I was watching them like a hawk to see how they make their dogs. It was busy for week-day at 2 pm. Lots of cabbies, locals - and kids.

The dogs aren't huge - and it required two dogs to satisfy me - but along with a small bag of frites - and there's nothing terrible small about their small bag of frites - I was bursting. All for about $5.

5/5 from this Hot Dog fanatic.
