Christmas Feeling...Time for Sharing [General]

Just a thought...after reviewing the wealth of information within this forum...it is clear that there are a great number of people who could make a difference. The obvious through line here is that we all love food. Are there any ideas that could harness this passion for food and make an impactful difference...talking to resto owners...connecting with the shops...raiding our pantries...it is that time of year where everything helps...any thoughts on using this network to provide food for the less fortunate. I find it unsettling when we all rant and rave about this meal vs. that one...this experience vs. that one...What about providing those without the means to enjoy a night out with some food for the holidays? This network is very active…can there be a call to action?

What a nice thought.

I stock up on canned goods and unperishables when they are on special. The food bank comes around twice a year and I usually have about 10-20 cans of beans, or boxes of pasta or whatnot to donate, plus whatever extra loose change I find around the house.

Some grocery stores have a bin where you can donate right in the store.

I'm interested to know what else did you have in mind?

"I find it unsettling when we all rant and rave about this meal vs. that one"

Haha.. well that's what this site is all about, so prepare to be unsettled! ;-)

Your sentiment is a good one though... However, I think we're all capable of giving to good causes independently of each other. I heartily agree with mmmfood's recommendation of donations to the ottawa food bank (www.theottawafoodbank.ca).

One very interesting tidbit (that wifey learned a few years back): the Ottawa Food Bank gets good deals when they buy food. Their website currently says that they can get about five dollars worth of food for each dollar you give them. This means that if you give them $100 they can convert that into food that would cost you $500. Your donations are tax deductible so your money goes further still!

This is like donating to a charity that has *negative* operating/administrative costs... fantabulous!!

Unsettled...lol...Inspired! As I flip through the posts within the forum I see a very active and passionate group of food lovers. Exchanges are passionate, and thoughts run rampant. I was just toying with the notion of using this forum with its collective energy to create a platform that could make an impactful difference at this time of year. This on-line community could serve as a great catalyst for charity. I do not mean to step on any feet with my benevolence from afar. I am just thoroughly impressed with this on-line community and I wonder how we could do something special…I will certainly look into the food bank in TO and see if they have adopted OTT’s conversion value. I hope to seed many more thoughts on this subject!

JMack I know you mean well, but all 3 of my kids' schools are having canned food drives, as well as many workplaces around town etc. Dalhousie street businesses are having or else already have had a sales event/food drive as well. There are already events going on that people can particpate in or give to.

Also in the next week I'm about to get slammed at work, and have barely started my Christmas shopping.

If there was some sort of Ottawa Foodie's organized event such as a fundraising dinner, or a potluck where everyone brings a dish to eat and makes a donation of what they would normally spend on a restaurant meal or whatever I'd be happy to participate, but.......

I think that kind of thing would be better done in January or February when hungry families still have needs but people have gotten over their Christmas "warm fuzzies" and are paying off their credit card bills and not donating to charity en masse.

my 2 cents. change given on request.

That is a really wonderful idea. I think that we can all agree that 2 cents can go a long ways it has the support of the masses.
