Bar Rescue (on Netflix) [General]
2014 Nov 21
The Pirate episode for me was where it became clear that it's entirely about making an entertaining TV show, even if that comes at the expense of actually helping the struggling business owners. Aside from Corporate Bar and Grill being a terrible name and theme for a restaurant, it's pretty clear that the goal was to create maximum drama by insisting on a concept that the owner would absolutely abhor and would never be willing to keep. The over-the-top pirate theme was clearly not working, but to suggest that you can't attract the corporate lunch crowd while maintaining at least a little bit of the whimsy and humour that made the business worthwhile for that owner seems ridiculous.
