Cuts to federal meat inspection won't impact food safety [General]

For those who are concerned about our food safety, yesterday's Globe and Mail article states that cuts will be made to federal meat inspection and the cuts may take place as early as April. Positions that will be cut are mostly food inspectors that were hired after the listeriosis outbreak in 2008.

Service Canada is expected to hire additional staff on a temporary basis to process the backlog of employment insurance claims.

listeria was just the flavour of the day, like bse was a few years back. the extra inspectors were hired as a security theatre. food safety should be risked-based, but it's impossible to catch everything. there will continue to be outbreaks, and we just have to accept the risks.
