you're right, it's not surprising. but I never dreamed that they'd be raising fruits and vegetables to match a precise pantone color chip for their marketability. The article says that most apples in a grocery store are up to 14 months old. It is interesting to note that in the world of flowers, roses can be held for almost as long in controlled conditions. Many of the roses that flood the market at Valentine's day were cut in October. It appears that science allows us to keep things "kind of" fresh for way too long.

The article mentions the banana produced by Dole.

I read an interesting piece about the billionaire who owns Dole. He wants develop foods that will let us live to 125. And he's fanatic about fresh vegetables himself. He makes smoothies out of them, skin on - as in blending a banana with the skin on into a smoothie.
