Hot chili paste isn't a very specific name... Most likely the recipe author meant something like Sambal Oelek. If you pick up a jar of that at a grocery store it should fit the bill. It is an Indonesian chili paste and would be good with mayo!
actually, hot chili paste is an item. I buy mine at the korean food mart on rideau, but you could get it at any normal grocery stores now, I've even seen it at loblaws! However, you'll always find it in specialty asian grocers!
Yes you can even get green chili paste or red chili paste the red one being the hottest. I think I bought my last tin at Kowloon but pretty well everywhere in Chinatown has it.
