AsparaGANZA at the Ottawa Farmers' Market [Events]

2011 May 19
Asparaganza, a fest with something for all ages, happens this Sunday at the Ottawa Farmers’ Market at Lansdowne Park (8:00 – 3:00).

Those first green shoots, bursting with flavour – along with vitamins A, C, and folic acid - are the featured delicacy at the Ottawa Farmers’ Market. Feel free to indulge! Half a cup of these plump beauties cash in at only 24 calories – but who’s counting?

“Despite grey skies and a late spring, this year’s crop promises to be exceptional in both quality and quantity” says Market President Robin Turner. “Harvested the day before to ensure peak freshness, asparagus lovers will find no need to snap off fibrous ends from local asparagus.” Fibre starts developing in the stalk only after days spent in storage and transportation.

Take in one of the on-site cooking demonstrations with cooking-school luminary Liseanne Begin and learn about asparagus cuisine! Join in the “Asparagus Pancake Races”, open to clients and vendors, starting at 11.30. Check out the Vendor Asparagus Competition with its categories of ‘Heaviest Bundle”, “Longest Spear” and “Fattest Stalk”, but best of all revel in the first, freshest asparagus of the year whose taste and texture, loved through the centuries back to Roman, promise that summer is just around the corner.

The Ottawa Farmers’ Market at Lansdowne Park is open every Sunday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm rain or shine and the Orleans Farmers’ Market at the Centrum Plaza on Fridays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Oh that sounds good! Thanks for posting, but one question... is the plural of asparagus asparagi?

Think you grow the best Asparagus or asparagi?
If you grow asparagus at home enter our contest on Sunday, not just the produce vendors. There are three categories to enter in, the asparagus must be at peak quality, closed heads and firm, not turning into ferns yet:

Longest Stalk
Thickest Stalk
Heaviest bundle – no more than 12 spears each no longer than 12 inches

So bring your best game and have some fun!
