Ottawa Nopal (Prickly Pear Cactus Pads) Source? [Food/Vendor]

2011 May 3
Hello all,

I've been looking everywhere for these... does anyone know of a local vendor who carries FRESH Nopal pads? Preferably Opuntia ficus-indica (prickly pear/indian fig variety).

Or even better, a source for buying an established plant itself would be awesome! We've checked around the local nurseries but it's a bit of an exotic item (not exactly in our zone).

Much obliged for any help :)

I have only ever seen them in jars in Ottawa, but have bought them fresh here many times:

It's only a ten hour drive, so I'm sure there's something closer.

I've seen fresh ones at the Latin grocer on Somerset, I don't think it's a regular thing though. Check them out or maybe call ahead and ask.

Ooo I would love to get my hands on an actual plant (well, not literally...).

I wonder if it would be possible to get seeds to grow one?

You can buy a small plant on amazon, looks like they ship to Canada:

I actually bought one at FarmBoy in South Keys a month or two ago. I try to buy something out of the ordinary every time I go to try something new. I have to say, I didn't take a fancy to it.
