Kempenfest July 29 - Aug 1 in Barrie Ontario.

This is "Canada's Largest Craft Show" with lots of cool bands and an amazing number of Ontario Specialty Food Producers. Most of the Vendors are the actual owners of these companies, including yours truly.

This should be a fantastic long weekend, except for the traffic on hwy 400... but if you can get over that, come out and play at Kempenfest.

Wasn't the focus of feast of fields last year organic farmers??
I'm pretty sure it was.
I went last year when it was at Lebretton Flats.
The event was very good- the hours for some foods were kind of limited-I think there was only 1 hour in total of the dessert area.

Still the foods were very good and not super small portions- you could go back for seconds if you wanted too :)
last year was $45 also.

I did bid on one of the silent auction items and the vendor did not really honout the deal I bought. It was for 2 cooking lessons and...well I only got 1.
even though I have in writing what I bid on.
Feast of Fields management did know about this-won't be bidding on cooking classes from a certain place, that's for sure.

But I think if you bid on actual items or restaurant gc it is better.

I will try and dig up the pics I have- they are somewhere.

Tommorow Sun Aug 28th there is 2 food events going on.

Foire Gourmande Est Ontarien and Outaouais!

www.foiregourmande.com

being held at Lefaivre community centre (ontario) and Montebello marina (quebec).

I think you need a car to get there,so I can't make it.

Had some good (overpriced, but good) food at the Folk Festival on Saturday. Mugena had a booth and we enjoyed a roti. We also had loaded potato wedges from the hot potato company.

The Folk Festival food vendor lineup was good this year, priced well and varied, however we did miss Indian and/or Thai foods.

I cannot access the Harvest Noir site, nor can I access their facebook site. Anyone know how to contact them?

People still have issues dealing with some websites as their places of employment are still using internet explorer..... :(

"Get on the List
Invitations to Harvest Noir are limited, so REGISTER NOW. The first 185 people that register will be able to invite select friends. A percentage of proceeds will go to BioRegional North America, a non-profit organization based in Ottawa. Harvest Noir tickets are $37 to cover costs of the indoor venue, performances, security, insurance, etc. A happening by The Mysterious Events Co. Contact us info@harvestnoir.com "

2011 Sep 28
Is Harvest Noir still on? I had to cancel when they changed the date to saturday because there is no way I can be ready by 4pm. I understand they changed the date because it was easier for parents to get babysitters, but the last communique I got said they needed 450 for it to be a go. Sad to miss this, was planning some really elegant stuff.

Fish Fry October 14 Knox United Church.

I've been to tons of these on the American side and have always enjoyed them. There is one coming to Knox United Church in Nepean that I intend to check out. It's from 5:30 to 7:30 on Friday October 14. Here's how to find Knox
www.magma.ca/~knox/
I think the cost is about $15.
If you can't make it, I'll try to post pics.

2011 Sep 30
Headed to Saveurs Gatineau tomorrow at the Casino. Anybody been previous years? Looking at the number of exhibitors I'm a little worried it may not have much for food.. I traded going to Beau's Oktoberfest for this.. lol.

2011 Sep 30
Apparently there is an Octoberfest thingy at the Richmond Fairgrounds this weekend. I have no idea what's involved or who's involved with it, but I imagine there could be beer. :)

2011 Oct 16
As promised, here is a photo from Knox United Church Fish Fry. The way it works is that the church hires a company to come in and handle the fish fry part. There were lots of volunteers doing everything else. Tickets were $15 and they give you a number, seat you and cycle you through the food lines in order. The fish (touted as New Zealand Cod) was fried very crisply - maybe a tad overdone for some people but just the way I like it, tasty and very moist, though no doubt frozen. For $15 you got two pieces of fish, a healthy portion of fries, church lady coleslaw (yum!) and a dinner roll. There were jugs of water and lemonade on each table, and coffee tea and cupcakes for dessert. The cupcakes were also of the "church lady" variety and tasted like birthday cake (also yum!). This is the first church bazaar or dinner of the season that I've been to in Ottawa, and although congregation members predominated, I learned that there were large numbers of non-members there just for the food - like us. I have learned there are MANY more in the next few months and will post them here when I get more info. I always enjoy the preserves and bake tables at these events, and the latest thing apparently are portioned home made frozen entrees to take home. I'll be running a small tea room at a bazaar in November and will be sure to keep everyone updated on that one.

2011 Nov 18
Holiday Sale of Tasty Treats Nov. 26!

Hope you'll all indulge me for a little promotion here.

The picture is of my practice run of sweet potato yeast rolls for the bake table at Trinity United church Bazaar, Sat. Nov. 26.

Lots of good homemade stuff! From last year's experience, some of my favorites will sell out early, so here are my insider foodie tips if you're planning on going: From the bake table, look for pinkie squares and tiny and beautiful empress cookies. Spiced nuts and homemade candies. Lots of home made pies, cakes, squares, breads. There is a special section for preserves that features a lot of home made jams/jellies/chutneys. My finds last year included green tomato mincemeat, pear ginger marmalade, and heritage varieties of apple sauce.

And for the first time, I will be running the tea room and cafe: I spent yesterday putting home made soups through a sieve, and I'll be making cherry and ginger filling for tea sandwiches next week. Stop by for sweet or savory sandwiches, soups, pies and other goodies. We'll also be doing takeout. If you do stop by, please make sure you introduce yourself as an Ottawa Foodie. Ask for Derek. Just please be gentle if you review the food on here, as I've never done this before LOL.

Oh yeah, and there are crafts, antiques, vintage jewellery, books etc. too.

Location is Trinity United Church
1099 Maitland Ave. just south of the queensway.
9 am to 1 pm

blubarry--love that you posted this. I suggest foodies post church bazaars, etc dates. I picked up some great baking and crafts today at the Legion in Constance Bay--including some jam and pickles that look very tempting. Good post!

2011 Nov 21
Thanks WC. here is one of the two ginger and star anise infused Sweet Potato/Coconut/Pumpkin pies that I made for the cause. I hope they are good sellers, because I doubt I will make them again - too labor intensive! And re: non food items, I've seen some nice carved wooden ornaments, some stained glass etc. But my main concern is the food LOL.

It's on May 1st, but they sell out right away.

I'll be at the old fire hall/community centre in Ottawa South (Sunnyside) on Sunday, November 27th from 10-2. I'll have what is left of my vanilla (mostly only double strength) in rum or brandy, Madagascar and Tahitian vanilla beans and metric butt load of Whiskey Rocks. I needed something to sell at this show and was all but out of vanilla. I picked up some soapstone from an old supplier I know, rented a good tile saw and got to work. I cut and hand-polished 200 of them for the show tomorrow. It was a busy day. Whew!

Anyway, I hope to see you there. I'll be the madman in the kilt.

2011 Nov 27
Saturday was the Abbotsford House Bazaar bake and craft sale.
They did not have much homemade baking left Saturday by 2pm, but there was the "usual" policemen who always come to buy the homemade frozen apple pies that were being sold for $8.
I did not buy one (next year maybe...),

But I did buy some handknit mittens, hat and a cute hand sewn teddy bear where you can pose the arms and legs :)
-I was told in the spring the same seniors centre will have a Teddy bear tea and some kind of strawberry social where they sell crafts...

2011 Nov 27
Wondering if any of you came to Trinity for the bazaar yesterday? There were 150 lined up before we opened and a lot of things disappeared in the first 15 minutes. Re:the tea room, we got the best feedback ever; Completely sold out of everything and nearly doubled our revenue over last year. If you came, Thank You and would appreciate your feedback either through private message or on this forum.

2011 Nov 27
If you are measuring food by the "butt load", you are putting it into the wrong end :-)

BTW, we had our best craft show ever yesterday - sold out at 3:30 and that was after me doing an emergency roast at 1 o'clock because things were selling so fast. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success for us!

2011 Nov 27
Hi Blubarry, my wife and I did make it to Trinity, primarily due to your post! Though we also live in Copeland Park and were planning to hit a couple of bazaars that day - but didn't make it past yours! Tea room fare was a delight, I had the smoked turkey sandwich and chipotle veg soup - both amazing. Wanted to sample the desserts but really, I just had soup and sandwich at quarter past ten. And, we did snag some peanut brittle. Alas, by the time I tried to locate it later that day it was gone! She said it was delicious. Wish I could have tried it. No problem, we still have some pickled dills, a nice apron, and a dart board for our cabin to show for the visit. Good times, we will be back next year, thanks!

2011 Nov 28
I just read online that there is a "seniors craft show" at City hall on Dec 8th.
This was on the Heavenly Honey website.

I do not know much about this.

Also Dec 2/3/4 Holiday food and craft show at Museum of Civilisation!
I have gone the past 2 years and it is a lot of the food vendors from Marche Outaouais food co-op and mostly Quebec craftspeople.

-last year the wine vendors (all local/quebec) were giving out free samples (just small 1/2 oz cup...but nice to try anyways, also cheese samples, breads and I remember trying the bison spring rolls (free sample of a small piece)...you could buy some to take home.

The crafts were nice you could get scarves knitted from locally spun wool, candles, bath products-there was around 30 vendors there in all.

There was also Ferme Saveurs des Monts there- a chicken farmer.
They did not have any samples, but they did bring along a large freezer full of their products and were selling them there.
The chicken sausages are all good (around $12pk..I have them at home).
Chicken pot pie is good- all white meats (around $12 or 13).
Casoulet made with chicken (good, forget the price)
I have their chicken breakfast sausages here, but not tried them yet..made w chicken and maple syrup...no preservatives in any of their products either!

**I do not know if they are there this year, but guessing they might be?
email to find out I guess, or call them.

2011 Nov 28
Thanks Scrabbies for your kind words! It was a fun day for us too, and we raised about 10k in 4 hours, so thank you for your patronage, and glad you found some good stuff!

2011 Dec 2
It looks like the programming for A Taste of Winterlude has been posted: www.canadascapital.gc.ca It looks like they have alot of great events this year.

2011 Dec 5
Went to the holiday fair and craft sale at the Civilization museum in Hull on Sunday.
Not a huge crowd- maybe 100 people around 3pm?

this year there is only 1 floor or tables, last year there was 2.
There are 2 vendors selling soaps, Doozy candle, some company from Chelsea with lovely leather items, another w lether belts.

Art is in bakery, Saveurs des Monts chicken, the goat farm (the brand Aubrey's sells)- they are there too w cheese samples, lots of jam samples from many vendors, some fresh produce even, a bison farmer w egg roll samples and you can buy a frozen package to cook at home.
Saveurs des monts did have chicken samples- they had their new chicken cretons- it was good.
Also 3 liquor and wine places and free samples- the samples were around 10ml ea.
but you could get 10 different samples in all (I only tried 3 things).
there was iced apple cider liquor, strawberry wine, red wine, white wines, other stuff.

It is on next weekend and worth checking out!

Prettytasty this is another argument for some kind of Ottawafoodie pin or badge so we can recognize each other. We were at the Civilization Market yesterday too. I got some really great chai spiced almonds and lavender almonds, a selection of local cheeses from Les Folies Bergere, and of course Art is in Bread. The quality of the crafts on display was good compared to some other markets I've attended, but we didn't buy any.

Bwah hah hah! Seinfeld-themed dinner at Atelier!

www.canadascapital.gc.ca

I wonder if they'll serve babka?

2011 Dec 5
The Atelier Seinfeld dinner is $226.66.

I wonder which episode(s) had $226.66 in it.

If some Ottawa Foodie (less financially challenged than me) goes ... please post a review here.

I found out about this event on CTV Ottawa Morning Live this morning.

Shawn Dawson and Darren Prashad are trekkers that are setting out to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents. This year they are planning on scaling Mount Everest. They are raising funds to subsidize the cost of their trip. They are holding a fundraiser on March 28th at Fatboys and are advertising bourbon, beer and bbq. Okay. I know it's last minute, but my wife-like girlfriend sighed heavily when I reminded her that Bon Appetit is tomorrow night (May 1st) from 5:30 - 9. She is planning on having a tiring day and doesn't feel like going.

I'm looking for a dinner companion. Someone who doesn't mind getting their bib a bit dirty or at least doesn't mind seeing me with beer foam in my moustache.

Interested? Email me.

Thanks to those who emailed. A great time was had.

2012 Nov 19
It's that time of year again. Trinity United Church, 1099 Maitland just south of the Queensway will be holding their annual holiday bazaar this Saturday Nov. 24 between 9 am and 1 pm. Lots of home baking, preserves, china and collectibles and this is the second year I'll be running the cafe together with my partner. Soups, sandwiches and pies on offer, so if you do stop by, please look for me in the kitchen and introduce yourself as an Ottawa Foodie.

The twin to this pie will be there, but there are lots of other baked goods on offer, including a couple of kentucky derby pies that I'll be making this week and a few quiches, thanks to the suggestions from other Ottawa Foodies.

If you are looking for recommendations as to what to grab first, go for the pinkie squares, the green tomato mincemeat and the empress cookies. The jewellery table is a mob scene as soon as the doors open, so that's a good time to turn your eye to food.

Lots of creamy vegetable soups, chili dogs with bbq onions, pies and sandwiches in the cafe! Also available to go.

2012 Nov 25
Thanks to any of you who came to the Trinity Bazaar / Cafe on Saturday. My team of volunteers served over 200 people both at the cafe, and for takeout in the space of about 2 1/2 hours. Final earnings not yet in, but we served more than last year, so thanks again. Last year we sold out, so this year we increased our volume and sold out again. Would love feedback if any of you were there.

2012 Nov 26
And thanks also for the suggestion to put savory items on the bake table. As an experiment we made 10 quiche and they were snapped up right away.

Sorry I didn't get this onto the forum sooner. Today the annual Mochitsuki festival was celebrated by the Ottawa Japanese Community. Photo is of freshly made Udon that I enjoyed this afternoon, there were also other homemade foods - sushi, fresh and frozen mochi, sweets, and rice and adzuki bean dishes. Mochitsuki is about pounding the rice with huge mallets (you can take a turn if you like)into ingredients for the mochi. There were also Japanese arts and crafts and entertainment including dancers and taiko drummers. The event is usually held on the first Sunday of December and I'll make sure to give advance notice next year.

2012 Dec 10
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Westboro Holiday Food Market on Sunday. We managed to score a couple of big boxes of food and almost $1,100 for the food bank! Plus, it was a fantastic day for the vendors and many clients who took the time to visit.

I can't say enough how much we appreciate the generosity of the public who attend these events. I know they're there to find good food and interesting gifts, but they sure do open up their purses to the less fortunate. I thank you all.

Thanks to all my OF friends who showed up. It's nice to put a few new faces to names.

Well, that's my last show for the year. Anyone else who needs items can contact me through my website rizak.ca for personal attention. All products are shown there.

If it's anything like the Christmas show, it'll be crazy all day so I can't really recommend a time when it'll be slower. There were people waiting to get in and we almost had to close the door on a few. Just be patient and take the time to visit every booth. I'll be just inside the door, by the cash machine.
[Liminal plug] Easter is coming. Don't forget the vanilla.

I've had to discontinue my traditional discounting method because the other vendors were getting jealous. Sorry, no cash-for-kisses this time around.

Just a reminder to those planning to come to the Easter Food Market tomorrow (Saturday, March 23) to try to bring a non-perishable food item to add to the food bank donation. I really want to see that bin fill up!

2013 Mar 22
A reminder that A Taste For Life is Wednesday April 24 in nearly 50 Ottawa Restaurants. That evening, 25% of your tab goes to Bruce House & The Snowy Owl AIDS Foundation.
This event now in its 15th year, was started in Ottawa and has spread to about 20 other communities across the country. It raises close to 100K here and the overhead is less than 10k so over 90% goes directly to people living with AIDS.

All you have to do to support it is RESERVE and go out to dinner Wed April 24!

Here is the link: www.atasteforlife.org

Thanks all!

Went to the OFSA Easter Food Market yesterday and dropped a little bit of cash.

I was really sad to realize that my after lunch run made me miss Relish. They ran out of food at 1pm shortly before I arrived. They had pull pork and amped up mac and cheese.

The Manotick Village Butcher was sampling sausage and pulled pork. Had a chat with Tony (Cookout Roaster guy) and a very nice chat with James, one of the coowners of MVB. James is going to check if he can get O'Brian's beef cheeks and will call me back. They already ran out of the marguez lamb sausages which I wanted to try so picked up some Irish sausages instead. Also got some beef stock to try.

Had a good Thai chilli handmade chocolate from Koko and have a couple more of liqueur chocolate to try. But at $2 for each small chocolate, it would be an occassional treat. They are nice but I still have a weakness for good Belgium chocolates such as Leonadais.

Sampled some Hummingbird chocolate. I think I tried some amazon and ecudor chocolate. They were nice but at $6/ 50g bar and $22 for 4 bars, they are more expansive than the Canadian retail price of the Valrhona chocolates I liked and I picked up mine in Paris at about $3-4 / 70g. Picked up a couple of chocolate flowers for $2 each for my nieces' Easter goodies bag.

I tried some jams and pepper jelly's from aunt lulus country kitchen. The jams were decent but not spectacular and are all high sugar. I don't buy jams anymore when the first ingredient is sugar. The pepper jellys were interesting and tasty while giving a kick. Still high sugar with sugar as first ingredient but bought a sample pack of 4x 60g jelly for $8 vs $5 / 250g jar. Also tried some of the chocolate bark but it was decent but not that special.

Sampled some salsa at Kawalsa Salsa and the only one that stand out for me was Pineapple Habenaero. Bought one jar and it was $8 for a small 200-250g jar. I had some fresh homemade pineapple salsa at a party in CA and it was very tasty so I might try to make some myself.

Sampled a couple of teas at one of the tea stands (think it was take charge tea) but they were pretty unremarkable. Some of the combination sounded interesting but they did not deliver.

Bought some berry bars and nanaimo bar at Auntie Loo’s Treats. They were decent but really high in sugar so only eating half a bar of each last night. If they are vegan, I wonder what they substituted for the butter and cream.

Went to Rizak's stand and got a bottle of brandy vanilla extract $12 and a couple of vanilla beans $2 each. Would be interesting to make some scones with it.

I have not been to the Kampai Toronto saké festival, but I am drooling at the lineup. Sadly it seems it will always be on a Thursday evening, making me unable to go at all (flights the same night from Island are expensive, and train would require a layover). If anyone wants to discover the drink, or deepen their appreciation, and have the opportunity, by all means don't miss it! The brewers from Japan alone make it worth it. (My only consolation is that it may bring a few new bottles through Vintages at some point afterwards.)

2013 Apr 26
For anyone who will be in Nova Scotia, and Cape Breton in particular, in late August, the foodie festival Right Some Good has just announced this year's line-up of participating chefs. ca.mg.mail.yahoo.com

2013 Apr 26
Never been to Right Some Good .... yet.

I was in touch with the promoter/organizer and she tells me they may be going back at Fortress Louisbourg for an evening meal.

Fortress Louisbourg (set in 1744) in absolutely magical, and to see it go into the night and then find your way by candlelight is something not to miss. (The fortress rarely has events in the night).

Oh yes ... the meal should be top-shelf as well.

Info:

The Fortress of Louisbourg is the largest reconstruction project in North America. The original settlement was founded in 1713 by the French and developed over several decades into a thriving center for fishing and trade.

2013 Apr 26
You beat me to it Captain Caper - in fact this summer there is a big 300 year celebration of the Fortress with a lot of extra things going on.

2013 Apr 29
The Tulip Festival starts this Friday and runs until May 20th. On May 8th an event called "Streats" will be held at Marion Dewar plaza and there will be lots of food trucks there. More info is on the Tulip Festival website here: tulipfestival.ca

2013 May 15
For beer lovers:

- This Sunday from 1-5pm, BroueHaHa will celebrate its 3rd anniversary with a "Open Beer Day". The clerk told me they will have lots and lots and lots of bottles to sample from, at very modest prices per sample. The exact logisitcs were unknown.

- And May 24-26 is the third Festibière de Gatineau, now at Jacques-Cartier park right next to the Interprovincial bridge - bigger, much better-placed, and still $10 for 1 day or $20 for the weekend, plus cost per sample. I spied a few things I so want to try while at BHH. (La Corriveau stout special edition, aged in bourbon casks for 3 months... mmmm)

Their website say they're trying to expand it to be international instead of just Quebec companies (and Molson Export.. hahaha!), so the new location is definitely a good move on their part. Oh, and a bracelet will be good for free STO bus service, so you can at least get back to Ottawa market/downtown before bussing or cabbing it home.

2013 May 15
Thanks for the heads up Niall...Ill drop by on Sunday. I live 5 minutes from there.

2013 May 16
Apparently the Sparks Street food truck festival scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled. I found out from a friend's facebook page and the event has been removed from the Sparks Street website. I have no other details.

2013 May 16
Apparently Sparks Street will be hosting a farmers market this summer. It will be starting on May 30: www.sparksstreetmall.com

And the chicken and rib fest will be held from June 19 to 23.

2013 May 27
Just a reminder that church suppers and other similar food events are great to post here. Sometimes you have to be very determined to find them. It took me half an hour of searching near Brasher Falls NY to find the pig roast that was hidden behind this door with very little signage.

2013 May 27
Here's my plate from the pig roast in Brasher Falls. Pulled pork on a potato roll, roast pork, beans, slaw, NY State Salt Potatoes, lemonade and a brownie for 8 bucks.

2013 May 30
Contrary to my earlier message, I'm now off to board a plane to kampaitoronto.com and bask in 48 brewers from Japan (including saké, shochu and umeshu). Boarding the last flight home, and glad taxis will be nearby, cause I ain't walking too well, even if spitting out most of it. A few I plan to enjoy. :)

2013 May 30
Niall Yay! Can we expect a post-trip review?-;) I noticed umeshu will be on offer - is that Japanese plum wine or am I thinking of something else?...

2013 May 30
Niall, full shochu report please!

2013 May 31
Nice Niall,

I guess that is a food or drinks festival worth traveling to.. Debrief please :D

2013 May 31
I went to the Ottawa Food Bank food aid bbq today. (I posted details further upthread.) Lunch included a Works hamburger, chips, and a drink. (And there was enough food for everyone!) There were four lines to stand in: one to buy tickets, one for hamburgers, one for condiments, and the last one was for chips and drinks. The hamburger was huge and we had a choice of white or whole wheat bun. Although the hamburger was a tad overcooked for my liking it is only a very minor quibble of the lunch experience. Tons of volunteers were on hand to sell tickets, serve hamburgers, monitor the condiments, and hand out chips and drinks. The lines moved VERY quickly and despite the heat (made worse by the hot bbq's) service was provided with a smile.

There were live bands playing and there were stalls set up around the periphery of Festival Plaza as well as inside City Hall featuring local businesses. Rochon Farms, Upper Canada Cranberries, and Savour Ottawa were there just to name a few.

This is probably the best organized event I've been to to-date and the fact that the money raised went towards a charity I support was a plus. Kudos to the Food Bank staff and volunteers for such a fun and well-run event.

My only beef is with the city for not providing shade anywhere. Tents or picnic tables/patio tables with umbrellas would have been a plus. By the time I got there around noon the two square inches of shade in front of City Hall was already filled with people. Given the fact it was 30 degrees out with nary a cloud in sight more shade would have been appreciated.

2013 Jun 1
Umeshu is plum wine, yes. I had some shochu. Full report tomorrow. One word: Wowwwwww.

EDIT Sunday I injured myself (broken clavicle) so typing is less easy, nor have I been able to think much about it. It'll be a bit longer, sorry.

BrewDonkey, I don't know who informed you of that. There's an "Events" forum category that's meant to denote all events.

This particular forum topic isn't really very useful as it applies to all sorts of events.

My "best practise" suggestion would be for you to create a separate forum topic for your brew tours, and then keep posting updates under that topic. I'm happy to help with that if needed (send me a message). Cheers!

Thanks for the update. From now on I will use a Brew Donkey Tours Forum Post that I update with each event. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

He is referring to me but what I recommended is exactly what you recommended that he create a thread for his tours and then just keep updating his own thread. In the same context I mentioned that I personally really don't care but he might get called out as a shill here since that does happen ...

Not technically a food festival, but on November 27 the Ottawa Centennial Chapter of Ikebana International is hosting their annual fundraising bazaar. There is a bake table, preserves, plants and plant containers, silent auction items and usually lots of Japanese items. It is at the Sandy Hill Community Center on Somerset St. East from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm. In past years, some of my favorite purchases have been hot pepper jelly, caribbean fruit cake, Japanese sweets and there is usually some high quality pottery. Also sometimes very nice items on the silent auction table that go for reasonable prices. Yes things usually are geared towards the Ikebana and Japanese communities, but there are some foodie items for sale as well - and if you come, there are also tasty refreshments served, but don't tell everyone.

Something about a "underground chef market" at the Ottawa Congress Centre or whatever you call that place now.

Supposed to be on Nov 30th and I know they were looking for people who wanted to make food, they are using a commerical kitchen.
This is all I know of the event.

I'm going to try and check it out.
It is the first year of this event.

Trinity United Church Christmas Bazaar is on Saturday, November 30th at Trinity United Church, 1099 Maitland from 9 am to 1 pm. Lots of homemade baked goods and preserves, silent auction table, jewellery, flea market finds, books, antique china etc. For the third year in a row I'll be co managing the tea room, with soups, sandwiches and pies. Come early for the best selection. This year I'm also making a few Kentucky Derby pies for the bake table. They go quickly. If you come by the tea room, please let me know you're an Ottawa Foodie!

Ottawa Mennonite Church running 10,000 Villages Sales every Friday/Saturday in November. The tea room is serving borscht, bread and home made desserts.

So, this weekend, Sparks street is doing a poutine fest. Went sterday and tried Green Papaya's Pad Thai Poutine and Spring roll poutine

2013 Nov 16
Thanks for the info, James. Any info on where the vendors are located by cross street, besides the restos of course? Any recommendations from anybody who might have visited already? I am tempted by Darcy McGee's Guinness braised short rib, or any BBQ or Italian variation vs the traditional poutine fare. I see my favourite poutine joint Routine Poutine from Gatineau will be there.

2013 Nov 16
For locations, the Sparks Street website has a map. Personally, I tried the Green Papaya's Spring Roll Poutine, and Pad Thai Poutine. I also had the Fadi's Lamb poutine and their Chicken Shwarma Poutine.

I like both of Green Papaya's poutines. However, I only got the sample sized versions, and that is what I recommend. Near the end I was getting...bored?...I guess. A full sized one wouldn't be so nice

Fadi's had really good fries, gravy and cheese on theirs. The chicken Shwarma was good when mixed wit the gravy, and so was the lamb, so I'd recommend those.

I overheard some people complaining about Gabriel's poutine stating it was pretty bad.

2013 Nov 16
Gotcha, top left of the site, missed it the first time. Thanks, James! I'll steer clear of Gabriel's then. Cheers!

Terrible choice to go to Darcy McGees. 15 minutes passed before we got our drinks. An hour before we got our poutine, only to see no short ribs on it. The guy takes it back, brings it back with what can only be described as roast beef on it, with a sparse bland sauce, hardly any cheese, and generally crappy fries. To think I had an amazing and much bigger bolognese poutine from Routine Poutine 2 days ago for less $.They comped the poutine due to the insane wait, but I still left zero tip and vowed never to step in this crappy pub again. Pubs in Ottawa are shit. Mtl is where the pub action is at.

Don't forget that the D'arcy McGee's franchise is owned by the same group that owns East Side Mario's (and is now owned by Cara foods ... Harvey's, Swiss Chalet, Kelsey's, Montana's, etc). It's not exactly chef-owned. ;-)

I was in the Routine Poutine line for half an hour (3:05-3:35) before bailing because I realized I would be there for over 2 hours at its current speed. I went to Mr Churritos (no lineup) and had a nice snack. Then I went home and picked up a poutine along the way. The Poutine aspect of PoutineFest did not deliver!

Honestly, I have no idea why people go to these things. The idea of sampling different poutines sounds great, but when the lines are hours long, it all falls apart. Better to grab some friends and visit a few different poutine trucks on your own time. Then go have a beer somewhere. Way better to socialize at a table than standing like sheep.

Not exactly "gourmet" but def different.

Basmati restaurant at Bank and Somerset has had a "Indian poutine" on the menu for quite a few years.
It is worth trying, but now I think they use frozen fries for it and prob the same cheese as their pizza, so I recall it is shredded cheese.
But they make the gravy from scratch and it is this spicy sauce with herbs and that is good.
It is not a huge portion, so prob better to eat in on the spot.
I think it is around $5 for a portion, better for a snack than a meal I'd say.

The wrap Naan sandwiches are great here too- not too sure for the actual Indian food LOL.

Holiday Market at Civilization museum in Hull.

they have local foods to sample and buy and a lot of crafts.
You can even get samples of local wines and alcohol drinks and I recall samples were free :)
The samples were pretty small (like maybe 15ml?)but I got to try a couple things before buying!

Wanted to add this to my poutine post, but can not edit?

A couple weeks ago tried a Japanese version of poutine at a food event in Hull.
The poutine was from Lina Le restaurant and they have a pic on their online menu.

www.lynalesushi.ca

I had the smoked salmon one, I have a pic on my cell phone once I figure how to transfer that. I only had a side dish size, so it was less in price.
The restaurant version sounds like it is quite big!

Darn, if I had known that FF, I'd never step foot in there. I confess I have had only sub-par experiences at Darcy McGee's, so my expectations were low to begin with, but this took the cake.

Ultimately, we should have taken a poutine and burgers or dogs at the stand just outside the aforementioned pub (T&T I think it was). Very short lineup. Every other place was nuts, even the doughnut and funnel cake vendors. The nice weather I believe contributed to this. Today it must be more sane.

Just a reminder that I hope to see some of you at the Trinity United Church Annual Bazaar Sat Nov.30 between 9 and 1. Say hi to me in the cafe if you come for lunch or a piece of pie. Pic is of one of the bundt cakes.
