caramelized onions on bbq? [General]

has anyone been able to caramelize onions on a regular propane bbq? we are doing dinner at the cottage with a lot of people, so keeping the cooking outside & on the bbq makes it easier. i need to do up the onions somehow and wondered if they would caramelize if i thinly sliced them, added some butter and wrapped in heavy foil. i don't have time to do a test run first.

You can use a cast iron frying pan on the grill. I also have my cast iron griddles so it would be no problem there.

I second that cast iron pan, we do it all the time.

Depending on the intended use, there are many great ways for onions on the BBQ:

- use whole, peeled, chop only one end off, pour coke "in" open end and wrap in foil. butter optional.

- slice 1/2" thick keeping intact, skewer like a lollipop, brush with EVOO, grill till slightly soft (try not to move them much for nice grill marks). Brush with mixture of honey and brown/dijon mustard with a few minutes left. red onion works best.
