What recipe websites are your favorite? [General]

2007 Mar 5
I have just spent a couple hours looking on recipe websites (for a salmon pasta salad recipe) and realized that I just usually google "said recipe" and the same websites pop up...such as cooks.com, allaboutfood....these are good because I can usually find what I'm looking for.

But I was just wondering if anyone knows of a unique site or has a super fave one?

Someone posted this question a while back, and Fresh Foodie moved the answers over to the wiki: wiki.ottawafoodies.com

Of course, there may be lots more links people want to share, but that should get you started, at least!

Ooops! I didn't know that.....thanx, though...that helps!

I added it to the global list... but thought I'd mention it here too. www.epicurious.com I tried a wicked Tenderloin in Cognac/Dijon recipe last week from here.. and it was awesome! Of course, being who I am, I had no shallots, so used spanish onion.. and had no Cognac.. so I used some single malt scotch... I know you're thinking it... call me uncouth. ;-)

Hi Pete;
Epicurious RULES! I especially love being able to store your favourite recipes. I have been on that since since 2000 and have over 175 recipes stored that I used on a regular basis.

That is one feature that makes it stand out. Also the Advanced Search feature so you can get really specific about what you want.

I've always kinda liked allrecipes.com.

It's mostly user driven, with a good voting system and has some useful features like "Your recipe book" which basically bookmarks recipes you like or different printing options that remove all the banners and stuff.

allrecipes.com is also my favourite. i use the 'recipe box' feature as well as the shopping list feature, and I just love the "search by ingredient" option!

I've heard some criticism about some of the recipes being too 'out of the box' but I just pick and choose the ones I like. Quite a collection of recipes there, and many with photos.

allrecipes.com amuses me, but I don't...er...those are some pretty bad recipes.

An amusement:

allrecipes.com

Not being able to easily search for vegetarian stuff irks. "Ingredients I don't want" is not terribly helpful if there're hundreds; you can't just tell it "meat...seafood...poultry."

Epicurious I love, though. Very reliable recipes.

Re. just Googling a dish: try a Google image search, too. Not that the best pictures necessarily go with the best recipes, but. Great for fans of food porn.

Usually, for allrecipes, especially if I'm trying something new, I'll go with the herd and pick the recipe with the highest average rating / votes combo.

Yes, it's worth it to read the reviews too, another handy feature on that site, because you'll get some tips as to how to improve, or possible substitute ingredients.

www.marmiton.org

36k recipies and you can search with different criteria:
- by ingredient combination
- by difficulty
- by budget
- vegetarian only
- By type of course (entree, main course, dessert, sauce, etc.)

Very good, if you're out of inspiration and you have some pork & tomatoes, just go on the site and search for recipes with these ingredients along with a "Very Easy" recipe and Voilą!!

NOTE: There's an english version of the site but with less recipes (ingredients names are not translated it seems)

I use epicurious but I think I prefer egullet for recipes. There is a section for recipes, called recipegullet, but a lot of the best recipes are hidden in various threads in the forums. This does make searching more challenging, but the discussions of various dishes or recipes seems a lot more interactive than the review system on Epicurious, and in a thread of a particular food...say Macarons, or Roasted Cauliflower for instance you'll usually find several recipes for the same dish. Sometimes several members will try the same recipe and compare experiences.

While I love Epicurious and have been a member for years, I have a personal favourite for recipes.

RecipeZaar
www.recipezaar.com/

They feature the usual search engines; breaking down by ingredient, recipe name and so on, they also cater to folks that have specialized diets as well.

While I am lucky enough to not have too many no-no's, I seem to be surrounded by folks that need special recipes (ie. diabetes, celiacs, vegan, allergies)and this is a good place for that. They also have recipes listed by cooking methods and alternative.

The forum community here is pretty good too and most people are polite and knowledgeable.

Here are a few others I like:

Top Secret Recipes
www.topsecretrecipes.com

One of my very favourite sites, although maybe odd for here:

My favourite is vegweb.com. I've found that the four and five star recipes are consistently tasty!

Not a recipe site, but this

travelingfoodies.blogspot.com/

has a lot of comments on -- and nice pix from -- local places.

I notice he comments on his cats' meals; I went to 'Natural Pet Foods' in Westboro this aft -- www.naturalpetfoods.ca/ -- and had to beat down the instinct to write it up here. (Really, recommended for those fond of the furry...)
