Suggest a vegetarian-friendly place for a birthday? [General]

At least two people going are vegetarian, but have neither truck nor trade with tofu or similar 'substitutes.'

At least two others are fans of simple meat-and-potatoes stuff.

At least two others can be taken almost anywhere, but might balk at expensive.

Tastes are probably too varied for the group to settle on any one ethnic restaurant -- I think. I'm still open to suggestions.

I want posh, but not to the point where I'm irritating the rather-be-at-Harvey's crowd. But I don't want something overly casual, either.

Serious drinkers these are not, but nobody wants a plonk 'house wine,' either.

At this point I'm almost leaning towards a steak house. Yeah -- vegetarian -- but one of the two, when told she could go anywhere in the city on her 16th birthday, picked a steak house, and ordered nothing but plate after plate of sautéed mushrooms. Her daughter is a little bent that way. How're the sides at Hy's these days?

Hy's is an interesting choice, but it might be kind of pricey for the balkers. How about a good Italian restaurant? There's plenty of meat and potatoes (AKA veal and gnocchi). Nobody hates pizza and pasta, and there are always vegetarian choices. Wines can be good at Italian joints too.

Unfortunately, I haven't been to enough Italian restaurants to be a good judge. We weren't at all thrilled with Mamma Teresa when we went a decade ago (but appies were good). Zola's, Biagio's and Vittoria Trattoria weren't incredible either. We've had fantastic pasta and a pleasant atmosphere at Flying Piggy's.

Mr. B's March House is a great Italian place. Not much on pizza, but they have lots of other Italian style mains, and decently cheaper than at Flying Piggy. Very nice atmosphere there, as well, tends to be quiet. Just make sure you make reservations if you go.

We went to La Roma in Little Italy on Preston Ave. for New Year's....me and boyfriend vegetarians, and 2 others in the group were meat and potato people and not adventurous at all. Very nice place...definitely not too posh but fancy enough to dress up a little. We all found the prices affordable and the food we all thought was excellent! I ordered a pasta dish that had ham in it and asked for it without, no problems. We had appies and mains and were all full but not overstuffed. Unfortunately no room for dessert :( I believe this place is family owned...everyone very friendly. If you go, check out the huge pepper mill! Look under La Roma, I posted all the pics of our food that night here. I agree with Fresh Foodie that Italian is the way to go when you have a group of veggies and meat and potatao people!

For better or worse, I got Hy's stuck in my head, and... Well, review now up.

La Roma has been on my to-try list since I saw your pictures. I love the local food porn here!
