My favourite pizza in the world is the Gabriel Deluxe: bacon, olives, mounds of cheese - what's not to love?! I always order from the Baseline location - always very quick and polite service. I've also eaten-in at the Bank St. location - they have a good lunch menu with lots of simple fare as an alternative to pizza.
The negative experience I described with Gabriel's Pizza in the previous post was answered by Eli Saab the next day. The response was incredibly sincere and showed that Gabriel's was willing to do whatever was necessary to rectify the situation.
In this day and age, it so refreshing to be treated with professional courtesy from any part of the retail or service industries. The genuine concern on the part of the management of this restaurant shows that an incident like mine is more than likely an isolated one.
Whether or not I decide to try a pizza from Gabriel's again, they have won back my respect.
Our pizza was one of the most expensive and unsatisfying experiences we have ever had in Ottawa. The pizza was so greasy, it actually made my whole family ill.
The delivery driver only made the experience worse when, after I offered him $40 cash for a $25 ticket. He looked at me incredulously and barked at me "I don't have any change", as if I were an idiot for even offering anything other than exact change.
I told him that this was all I had and asked if he could just give me back $10, thus ensuring he would have at least a 15-20 percent tip.
Again, he said that he had no change and started stuffing the forty dollars in his pocket.
Now, I was incredulous. This driver actually thought I was going to let him walk away with a $15 tip!
I told him "No way — either fork over some change or give me my money back". He then rifled through his pockets and found five Twoonies. At this point, I just wanted him gone, so I said I would just take the $10 and he could have the rest. He still protested, saying this was all the change he had (obviously now caught in a lie concerning his early statement) and he was still arguing that he did not want to give it up. At this point I told him to give me the change or get out. He reluctantly handed me the pile of Twoonies, then left in a huff.
This was my first experience with Gabriel's Pizza, and I can assure you, it will also be my last.
Yet another 'suburban location is different from, and inferior to, the downtown one.'
Trying to eat in Kanata, now that it's the nearest bit of Ottawa, is driving me nuts.
What we had here were pale imitations of the fat Bank St pies. My 'double cheese' was faint on cheese, not the Bank St's heart-stopping pile of melted goodness. There was no discernible difference between mine and a non-'double cheese' that was also ordered, and I thought of saying something -- but we just wanted out by that point. It was also quite the Chuck E Cheese; I've never seen so many tots in a resto, everyone from infants to grade-schoolers having birthday parties.
The pizza is good, but if you go for breakfast don't take a chance on the spanish omelette, it's awful! It's not really even an omelette, more like a fritatta filled with pizza sauce, yuck! And so acidic.
I went through a phase a couple of years ago of getting their small, double-cheese, plain pizzas; I think they may've had a special or something.
It was quite the mess of cheese, but, yum. Browned just so on top. Finishing even a small alone is not easily done.
Ordered dinner the other week, and I remain fairly impressed. The sauce could be more flavourful, but: cheese generous, toppings fresh, crust not terribly thin despite the request for same, but I have to admit a thinner crust wouldn't have gone well with their style of pizza.
It pains me that there is no dough ball in the centre of the pie -- it looks like that sort, if you know what I mean...
The salad wasn't bad. Extremely fresh stuff, not too stingy on the non-lettuce parts, but it lost points for using those dreadful bitter white parts.
