Just another reason we need to find an Ottawa Foodies "secret handshake" or something...

Well, that does it--stopping on the way home from work to give it a try! Hubby, who is a huge "fried" chicken fan, is practically drooling from his office. Since I can't stomach KFC (horrible food poisening experience hasn't dimmed after 16 years), I am looking forward to some great chicken.

Well, I went for lunch today as well after reading blubarry's comments and it was every bit as good as reviewed. I actually wondered on entering how many other customers in there were Ottawa Foodies. We both had the 4-piece chicken and ended up bringing home several pieces as the servings were generous. I asked about "broaching" and was told it is cooked in a type of pressure cooker with a very small amount of oil with their own spice mix. It works. You don't get that coat-your-mouth feel like when one eats KFC (which up until now has been my secret foodie shame). The counter staff were friendly and accommodating and were happy to chat after lunch about their new restaurant. They won't have a "grand opening" until the kitchen staff is comfortable. I hope they stick to cooking as it's ordered.....it is absolutely worth the wait. I want to try a kebab and homemade naan next time. If this was in my neighbourhood, I'm sure it would be a regular stop.

Damn you Blubarry ...damn you .. I went today for the 4 piece -spicy ...and IT WAS AMAZING !! The 4 pieces made the mini-me pieces you get at KFC look like catfood. This chicken is as good as some of the places I eat when I worked in the southern USA. The chicken is cooked upon ordering and not sitting under a heat lamp for hours - it did take about 15 minutes but well worth the wait. Yes the fries were of the frozen variety but were crisp, hot and lots of them. I left about 1/2 since I was full from the large chicken pieces. Bun was OK and the sides of spicy ketchup and garlic mayo were excellent. Thanks to you Blubarry ..I will be back many times ..damn you !!
On exit I did have a chance to meet Captain Caper who I know enjoyed his 4 spicy piece chicken. Nice to meet you Captain !! A new place that is reasonably price, excellent food and great value. It was not extremely busy but I know that that will not last long. I will be back !!

Feline Fan I think the fries were probablyfrozen, but crisp and hot. Decent/fine, not exceptional, but for me it was all about the chicken.

The fries look frozen, but the bird looks great. The bun, too.

What are their fries like?

I'm so glad Zaki is only 5 minutes from my home.

They opened yesterday and I stopped in today at about 1:30 and I was one of only 2 customers. Their specialty is "broasted" Halal chicken, so that is what I ordered. for about $11 all in, I got the pictured combo: Breast, thigh, drumstick and wing with dinner roll, fries and a drink.

The chicken is what I have been waiting for in Ottawa for years. Not exactly sure what the "broasting" technique involves, but this chicken was hot and juicy, with a crisp fried coating that had a delicious crunch; not at all greasy - just perfectly crisp and crunchy. And HOT! I had to wait about 15 mins. for my order but it was scorchingly hot when it arrived, and stayed that way for half an hour! Fries were good and there were two sauces served with the chicken that were nice additions, a garlic mayo and a spicy chili ketchup.

They also have a grill in the back that they were doing beef skewers on, so that might be worth a try as well, but for me it's all about finally having great fried chicken in Ottawa. I'm not sure whether prep will always take this long, but this stuff is worth the wait twice over. If Zaki's chicken is consistent, I'll be back again and again.

This chicken is amazing like everyone said: plump, juicy, crispy, incredibly non-greasy, and lightly seasoned. The seasoning is very mild, which allows you to enjoy the chicken flavour but it might be too mild for some. I tried one of them tossed in hot sauce, and it was nice to have variety but I prefer them plain.

Fries were seasoned and boring. I ate a few of them and left the rest. I took one bite of the unnecessary bun to see how it was -- not too bad. Go for the chicken. ;-)

I'd like to get a 4-piece meal with salad instead of fries/bun. That would be awesome.
