I actually like the coffee at Coras... it's nice and robust, not tim hortons watery-weird crap.
by far the best thing on the menu is the crepeomlettes. So delicious. Also worth mentioning are the potatoes (nicely done, fresh - not frozen, panfried - not deep fried) and the fruit that comes with nearly every dish.
My mom requests to go every time she's visiting from out of town.
FYI don't go here if you're expecting the usual '2 eggs, bacon/ham/sausage, and homefries' type breakfast. People seem to forget this isn't their specialty .
As much as I like their fruit platters, I hate paying $10+ for a plate of fruit I could easily carve up at home so I usually stick with their omellettes. Portions are very large and accomodating. Service is great at the Merivale location - there's usually a lineup outside the door, but it moves quickly (I suspect they engineered it this way, the ol' hotspot nightclub trick). Great toast.
Had breakfast this morning at the Merivale location. Coffee was a little too strong but that's my only complaint. I will order a latte or cappuccino next time. I took Fat Cat's advice and ordered the spinach crepomlette - YUM. My orange juice was a generous portion, freshly-squeezed and delicious.
Service was impeccable. Our server came by to check on us 4 or 5 times, kept our coffee cups full, and quickly brought sweetener and milk when we asked for it (usually our request for sweetener and milk is forgotten at other restaurants).
For countless coffees, one orange juice, a crepomlette (with generous portion of lovely fruit) and a joe-something (boyfriend had bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast) we spent $24 + tip.
I know Cora's is a chain but I would venture to say that this a chain that appeals to the foodie in the wild.
I let my daughter choose where to eat lunch on Friday. She had never been to Cora's and we were near the St Laurent location, so we gave it a try. I have to say I liked the setup of the dining room here a little better than the Rideau one...a large plating station in the middle of the room seems to keep the concentration of tables a little less dense. We were given the choice of a badly located but bigger table in the back corner, or a deuce in the middle of the dining room. We took the corner table.
Erin had the Raspberries 4 Lucie, which she really enjoyed.(Crepe with cream cheese, raspberries and custard) I had the Cora's special,(2 eggs, bacon, ham and sausage, toast and 1 pancake) and ended up giving my ham and half the bacon on my plate to the kid. My breakfast was fairly good, it was nice to have toast options beyond white and brown...I chose rye. I didn't care for the potatoes so it wasn't all good. On FatCat's recommendation I had cappucino instead of the coffee...I liked it enough to order two.
Beware of bill-padders like smoothies here, I showed my daughter on the bill how her 2 fairly small smoothies at $3.50 each cost almost as much as her meal at $10 and change.
I like Cora's but you don't go there for bacon and eggs. You can get that elsewhere for much cheaper. What you DO get at Cora's are wonderful waffles, crepes and piles of fresh fruit with lovely creams. I myself like the waffles with strawberries, bananas (minus the kiwi) with lots of whipped cream and strawberry coulis....mmmm, mmmm, good!!!
And for those of us that cannot decide between crepes, omlettes and eggs benedict, try the the Crepomlette. I like the Western one with ham and onions, rolled in a perfectly cooked crepe, smothered in hollandaise. Oooohhh and that hollandaise is good. I'm getting hungry now!!!!
And if you don't like their regular coffee (I'm not a coffee drinker but like the fresh squeezed orange juice) my husband says their cafe latte isn't bad...or at least better than the regular java. And there is more of it so you don't have to wait for a refill. His only complaint about the service is that they never seem to be quick enough on the refills so he can get enough caffeine in him in the morning.
I like the food at Cora's and I don't find anything wrong with the prices. What I don't like is the dining room itself, crowded and busy, tables so close together that you feel like you're sitting with the people on either side of you. I find it difficult to enjoy my food with servers rushing around and total strangers practically sitting in my lap. I enjoy Cora's quite a lot when it's not too busy. But not even severe caffeine withdrawal could make me touch the coffee there.
Folks frequently complain that Coras is just not worth the money. When talking to these people, what they're really looking for most of the time, is typical breakfast fare...bacon-eggs-potaotes-toast. Which is great, if thats what you're looking for.
Coras gives you the opportunity to expand your breakfast horizons and in a very attractive way. Presentation may be important to these folks but the best thing is is that you can eat the garnish and feel like it was an addition to the meal not just inedible eye candy.
Rarely have I been so irritated to not have my camera -- this is nice-looking food.
There've been a lot of complaints over having to queue up and then pay a lot, but -- somebody was waiting to seat us when we stepped in a bit after 8am, and "eggs Ben et Dictine" is an awful lot of good food for $11.
Not-so-large large and unimpressive grapefruit juice for $3.75 was a mistake, though. We didn't make it out of there for under $40 after tipping. Service was great -- sort of 'professional breakfast waitress' style; no waiting, coffeepot turning up at just the right moment, etc.
Interesting: repeated appearances of creton on the menu. It's definitely got some Quebecois in it.
One visit has not been anywhere near enough; I plan on returning repeatedly. The menu's great; it's the only place I've seen fruit, cottage cheese, and a poached egg look really appetizing.
Potatoes: good and ungreasy, albeit almost ungreasy to the point where I started thinking wistfully about the hash browns down the road at Denny's.
Fruit: oooh, good. Pineapple, kiwi, a strawberry, banana, apple, melon, something I've forgotten, all fresh. The presentation looked so nice I'm not going to call it gimmicky. I would've paid quite a bit for a nice pile of fruit I was actually going to eat, so that offset the price a fair bit. It has nothing in common with that limp, quarter-inch bit of warm and mushy melon that's just plate decoration in most places.
Eggs themselves: A, A+. Poached just right. Asparagus was neither woody nor overcooked, and they were generous with their mushrooms. I might've ditched the Swiss and applied more Hollandaise, though. But.
I'm relieved to've replaced Eggspectation, with its now awful food and awful service but still attractive menu...
As there are many Cora's in the area I cannot comment on them all but I can say this. The Cora's in Gatineau is exceptional. The service was above par, the food is delicious (most notably the fresh fruit that was served with breakfast) and the price ain't half bad.
By far the best thing at Cora's is either the Waffles or the Crepes!
These things are HUGE! Even the kiddie portions are enough to fill me. They come with many different types of fruit inside, and sauces too. I never get tired of these crepes. My favourite is the strawberry-banana with chocolate! Yummm.
The Raspberries for Lucy (Yummy cream cheese & Raspberry Waffle) is runner up.
