Dunn's Famous Deli by Ian

Mar 16

I am normally not this basic when it comes to reviewing the food, service, or atmosphere at a restaurant, but Dunn's SUCKS. Period. If you want to know why, go waste your money.

The Black Tomato by BigMouth

Mar 16

Had dinner at BT last Friday. Each time I dine there, my stomach is always very pleased.

We managed to get a cozy table with no reservations around 8 pm. The server was nice. The drinks weren’t that great but the food was delish!

I tried to order the Thaifu Vegetable Bowl but was told that they had run out of tofu. So I opted for the Butternut Squash Agnolotti. The presentation was beautiful. The quantity was more than I needed. The taste was rich, creamy and just melt-in-your-mouth delicious!

My friend ordered the Chicken and Tiger Shrimp Jambalaya. As the menu says, it was spicy! She said the dish was very good.

Lobster Poutine by New User 2542

Mar 15

My husband and i had a lunch today.
We heard about Petit Bill's has a reputation but food was disappointed.
I started with beets salad that it wasn't reasonable price, yellow beet was over over cooked and i paid $14.
We studied at Le cordon bleu, many friends recommended and they likes Lobster poutine.
It was soggy fries with broken sauce. I could taste any of Mascapone flavors. It was pretty gross.
I believe that ratings can be very deceptive.
But waitress was nice otherwise pricey and nothing special.

Vera's Burger Shack by chopper

The double Vera Burger. Man these burgers are incredible. Tons of seasoning inside. I guess it's a sort of steak spice mixed into the meat. Service was slower than fast food but still faster than a sit down sort of place.

This place is right next to Wallack's in Bell's Corners. In the same store as the "butchery" where the have great stuff as well. I got some new york steaks there the other night. They must have been 1.5 inches thick.

Thyme And Again by frequent diner

Mar 15

I was at Thyme + Again this morning and saw that they carry Art-Is-In Bread now on Monday's-which is great!!!!

On a side note, I also saw that they carry Gluten Free bread (I Think it's multigrain)- I believe Thyme + Again bakes it on site.
They seem to be coming out with more and more Gluten Free items, especially in the baked good section. Most baked goods that are gluten free don't really taste good- but I have a friend who is Celiac and loves every gluten free item that comes out of Thyme + Again- never a bad experience!

Dunn's Famous Deli by Scrabbies

Mar 15

No, the slicer is not broken. Your experience was typical. For an unknown, ill-advised reason, Dunn's serves smoked meat in thick chewy chunks. The flavour is there, I found it good juicyness wise, but for some reason thin-sliced just isn't part of the deal. Too bad, cause otherwise I'd show up more often. The take out deal isn't a bad price for the amount you get. They do have super cheap passable breakfast.

Navarra by Tracinho

Mar 15

Well, finally crossed this one off after eyeing it for some time. Service was excellent, amuse bouche was quite enjoyable as well, which included excellent olives, bread and a free-form type of salami rillette.

Had the Confit Pigs Cheek App, Gnocchi and Duck Confit. Unfortunately, Confit Octopus was sold out which was a slight bummer, but the other dishes were excellent and quickly made me forget the missing cephalopod. Presentation is a strong point and there are a lot of complimentary flavours going on in each plate. A lot of Asian flavours were present in the dishes and on the menu generally which was a bit surprising to me.

The other pasta dishes looked excellent as well, I have a feeling that this place might be doing some of the most interesting pasta dishes in Ottawa.

Top it off with a bite of desert on the house and I can say that the Murray Street restaurants (including THE Murray Street Restaurant) are 4/4 in my books. I won't put them in any order of course!

Egg Rolls at Wong's Palace by Fresh Foodie

Mar 14

These are the open-ended and meaty egg rolls, similar to what you might find at Welcome Back or Golden Palace, albeit a little smaller. I think they were $1.35 each.

Wong's Palace by Fresh Foodie

Mar 14

We've had take out from here a few times, mostly because they're in our 'hood. I never remember it being particularly great but tonight's craving for fake Chinese food meet with unusually poor results. Here's what we had:

* Egg Rolls (very good)
* Mushroom Chow Mein (not really terrible, but there was an unusual astringency that seemed to come from the mushrooms)
* Wong's Palace Fried Rice - the usual soy sauce rice with a few chunks of beef, chicken, and shrimp.
* Butterfly Shrimp - although they smelled like pure heaven in the car on the way home, these turned out to be a failure of epic proportions. $13.95 gets you 8 giant elongated chicken balls, each containing a smallish, butterflied, and very overcooked shrimp and a piece of bacon. Not crispy bacon, but bacon that was placed raw alongside the shrimp prior to being dipped in batter. The bacon is undercooked and the shrimp is overcooked, and the whole lot is blanketed in a thick bready chicken-ball batter.
* Steamed Rice (complimentary) - entirely unnecessary given our fried rice order, and entirely unwanted given its mushy blandness.

That said, I won't rule out dropping in once in a while for an egg roll or two!

Dunn's Famous Deli by schtickyrice

Mar 14

Had the smoked meat sandwich platter. The meat was generous and piled high as it should, but came in thick slimy slabs, not dry cured and thinly sliced. Did they break the deli slicer and couldn't afford a replacement? The rye bread was stale and definitely not Rideau Bakery quality, and the chintzy quarter of a dill pickle on my plate was soft and bland, without any hint of crunch that a proper Kosher dill should. I won't be going back.

Sourdough bread at Art-is-in Bakery by lady who brunches

Mar 14

As Jagash mentioned, The Piggy Market is now the exclusive distributor of Art-is-in's Beau's Sourdough bread.

The loaves are 12 inches in diameter, and use 1 liter of Beau's per loaf. It's pretty crazy. We picked a quarter loaf (selling for $7.50!) at The Piggy Market on Saturday, and enjoyed it with raclette.

It's airier than most sourdoughs, and wasn't really conducive to sandwiches or much other than dipping into oil, or eating as an open faced sandwich with a knife and fork.

However, it had a very rich flavour to it. If I could eat that much bread without the help of nine friends, I'd buy it more often.
