Silver Spring Farm's Garlic Fundraiser [General]
2012 Jul 19
Food Is Fun!
The garlic will be for sale at Silver Spring Farm starting on Tuesday, July 24 at 10:00 am.
I did a post on this last year. Feel free to give it a read if you want to get an idea of the variety of bulb sizes and pricing. One thing they did last year which I quite liked, is that they sold loose cloves in a cup for a decent price.
Remember this is a fundraiser and a very special one at that. I don't get fussed about pricing. It is a great cause.
They usually sell out in just a few days.
Last year I bought garlic at Silver Spring but also 8 other farms in Ontario. I probably stockpiled about 80 heads to get me through to July this year. A bit much. I might cut back to 70 heads this year.
What are your garlic plans this year?

I still can not get over the price of locally grown garlic. I'm not suggesting they try and match the cheap chinese garlic at grocery stores, but I would have to blow so much money on garlic paying the prices listed on your blog for this fundraiser (which are the norm), or those I see at (for example) the carp garlic festival.
I am certainly more willing to pay the price for non-profit charity however, so I may check this out.

For each batch of garlic I bought last year, I kept track of the grower, the variety, the date I bought it, the number of heads I bought. Why on earth I didn't keep track of the price too, is beyond me. I will this year though.
I stayed away from buying garlic at the Carp and Perth festival. I prefer to shop in September when the garlics have had a really good chance to dry properly. I found prices lower later in the season and also at road side stands. I bought garlic as far away as Baysville and Stratford. Just picking up a few here and there in my travels.
I am sure I never paid $3 a head. More like $1 or $1.50. Though size does matter despite what some say ;-) I did buy in bulk too and that saved some.
FYI, Silver Spring started their sale on August 10 last year so they are a good 2.5 weeks ahead. That likely means the festival garlic will be well dried this year.
The Carp Garlic Festival is August 11, 12 weekend. Perth is the same weekend. This is essentially their regular weekends for holding their festivals.
