Thermapen open box sale [Science]

Hi Stuart! Seems expensive, why do I want this over my Polder? It reads in 3 seconds or less as well? Though it's probably not waterproof. Was perhaps 20bucks?

Hi Ravi, if your Polder reads in 3 seconds you got lucky...most of them take 30 seconds and can't read thinner items like filet of sole where the thermapen can. The thermapen is considered the Rolls Royce of instant read thermometers.

25 bucks for a Cooper at Russell Equipment that will do anything the thermapen can do (except allow you to claim the 'thermometer hipster' status)

Yea I recommended Polder to a friend. His takes a crazy amount of time. Mine near instant. But for thinner meats I just slide it sideways. Thanks!

I may be interested in splitting shipping with 2 others. PM me if interested and we'll see if we can coordinate the order.

The Cooper and Taylor 9840 seem worthy and possibly a very good deal. I may check them out as well.

For what it's worth this is one of my best kitchen gadget pickups. The cheaper instant reads are no where NEAR as quick. It's 3x the price but 3x as quick.
Would suggest trying one out before scoffing at the price!

Have you tried the Cooper monty? How quick do you need? The cooper is a couple of seconds. I'd be surprised if thermapen was quicker

That's the thing. I've since been checking reviews and it seems that there are some good ones out there, but I have yet to see a review where the Thermapen wasn't the best. Since checking reviews, it seems that there aren't a whole lot of accurate AND fast thermometers out there. Even certain brands aren't consistent across their different models (Taylor comes to mind).
In most reviews the Thermoworks read in 3-5 seconds, where the Cooper was roughly 10. I know these are probably averages and maybe even on the high end. I currently have a Maverick that reads faster than it's "review score", but still nowhere near 5 seconds, or even 10 for that matter.
So, yes the Thermapen is costly, but like anything else, you pay for the best. Others can come close and at a fraction of the cost, but.....

I agree 110% Bobby. The thermapen ships with a calibration report for each thermometer and reads in 3 seconds flat. There's very little discrepancy from pen to pen. I have a 17 year old button style thermometer that I got in cooking school...its very accurate (test in ice water and boiling water a few times a year) and I've never had to adjust it. It does take close to a minute to register temps though.
Also, it's not British Racing Green :)

I was just at Russell and they have a new Cooper pen-style thermometer which says it reads in under 6 seconds. $19 + tax

My thermapen, which I ordered on the 17th, arrived this morning. Made some lamb shoulder chops on the Weber tonight. Instant readings. I'm in love. I know it's expensive, but it's seriously the best therm I've ever owned.

I have had a Thermopen for years and love it. It is very good for taking the temperature of sugar syrups for candy making where a few seconds can spell the difference between success and failure. That's not all I use it for, of course, but whenever I'm making candy, caramalizing sugar or tempering chocolate, it is invaluable.

I know a few people who have bought from the "open box" sale and they got brand new blister sealed units in perfect working order...so I didn't hesitate this time.
