Chat [Site]

Fresh Foodie - Thanks for your response. I haven't had the opportunity to use the Chat feature yet, but I'm sure it will be a nice addition. My only thought so far would be concerning your first point... it would be nice if there was someway of knowing who was present, I know I've used other Chat formats in the past, and whenever someone new entered / or left, the program would announce that... "Fresh Foodie has logged on".
EDIT - I just re-read this and realized it might sound as if I was requesting "you make an edit to the program", of course I understand that this is the way the program comes, I was just making an observation. :-)

Anyone want to cyber? By that I mean... cyber-food :P
Seriously though, it auto-emotes and I still haven't figured out who's on? Bad timing, I guess?

[In response to the following, posted by FF in another topic: Chimichimi, I don't even use Yaplet! :( I leave it there because it's harmless, but I consider it to be somewhat of a failed experiment."]
FF - Get rid of it then (yaplet)!

Oh NO !!!
Someone just stared a 'In-Yer-Face'Book group called "BRING BACK YAPLET TO OTTAWA FOODIES".
Oh Boy ..... and it wasn't even Captain Caper !
2009 Mar 4
Maybe one of the reasons why it wasn't used was because it's tiny and hidden off at the side? I didn't use Yaplet all that much either, but may have been tempted to if it were a top-level selection and was called something like "live chat", "chat room", or something equally lame.
2009 Mar 4
Momo - Something equally, or even more lame, we could set up a telnet chat or irc channel (#ottawafoodies), or we could propose that FF set up an Ottawa Foodies BBS!
2009 Mar 4
Chimi - YES. The IRC channel would then be accessible through a front-end on the Ottawa Foodies web page!
A BBS would be a fantastic blast from the past. I spent an entire morning, latte in hand, researching the origins of the phrase "k-rad cool" (or "k-rad k00l", or "|<-r4d k001", or etc. etc. etc.), merely because I was laughing about my old BBS days.

Haha a BBS! FF could code a 'Legend of the Red Dragon' style game based around food!
I think I still have a 14.4kbps modem lying around for sentimental nerd value...

I was just waiting for a LORD reference around here... hehe... have to say I wasn't expecting it from you Monty, but that's ok! Shameful admission: I used to be a SYSOP. Maybe I should change my username...
2009 Mar 4
It was based out of Kingston. I can't reveal the name, I've already shamed myself by outing my past life as a Sysop. LOL
2009 Mar 4
Hell no. Our focus was on phreaking/hacking, old-school stuff. You won't find it on any old BBS listings, that's for sure!

LIVE CHAT
I think this feature "failed" in it's past incarnation because of a variety of reasons...
(a) Size of TAB, I agree with Momomoto it might have worked out better if it had had more prominence,
(b) It had a "real" purpose, perhaps if instead of it just being used for Private Conversations, it was utilized for things like organized chats (ie a weekly chat on a particular topic),
(c) It was more user friendly in general... see my previous post of June 26th when the Chat was first introduced... ottawafoodies.com
I still believe that not knowing who was in the room, or when, made it wierd to use. First off, if you were interested in having a private chat, you didn't know when someone else came into the room, or if you enterred the room... you were sort of invisible at first... not that great, when you consider in "real life" one enters the room and is recognized and greeted "Hi ________"... and such is the case with other Chat Programs I have used... and because of that feature alone I find them more user friendly.
PS... To address item (b), I could see where this might work with wine or beer for example. We could let everyone know ahead of time what "vintage" would be discussed, and people could gather to discuss the merits of that "brew" glass in hand.
And if some of the other issues (a) and (c) were addressed, I'd be quite willing to host one of the Wine discussions.
Live Chat if utilized in a way that made sense to the mandate of Ottawa Foodies, could be a great asset to this site.

I just moved this discussion here from the "Gripes" topic... now we can chat about chat.
I'd still like to find a good chat solution for the site. Yaplet definitely isn't it.
P.S. My BBS/IRC chat history goes back a good 20 years so rest assured that I'm a big fan of the chat concept. :)

re: chat, I'm experimenting with a new chat solution courtesy of Geesee (GC = global chat).
Pros:
* You can see how many people are in the chat room right on the main screen of OttawaFoodes without having to click on anything.
* It doesn't maintain a history, meaning only the people in the room when you say something will see it.
Cons:
* You have to sign up for an account if you don't want to be called GuestXX.
* Advertising is more in your face (I can switch to a smaller client with less advertising or potentially pay for the service and eliminate ads completely).
...please let me know your feedback.

I'm live Geeseeing right now.
It's soooo lonely.
That animated ad bouncing around at the bottom of the window ... annoying ... but I can just reposition the window so the ad drops out of site.
No other comments right now .
Let's see if it takes off.
May be F&T will start a weekly discussion .. I got some ideas for topics.

You might have noticed a little green "Chat" icon on the right side of the site homepage or on your profile. This will take you to a rudimentary chat room I set up using the yaplet.com. I didn't publicly announce it because I consider it to be experimental and somewhat of a stop-gap measure. There was some interest in having a chat mechanism and this is by far the easiest way to support that. It doesn't integrate with the site itself, although it does sit nicely in its own frame while you navigate this site.
Some tips:
* Nobody knows you're in the chat unless you say something.
* You can hover your mouse over someone's text to see how long ago they wrote it.
* You don't have access to the chat unless you are signed in to your account.
* The number in green at the top of the screen (next to the key) tells you how many people are in the chat. If it shows "1" then you are alone.
